Monica Bellucci<\/strong>, who drains human beings of their souls as the wicked ex-wife of the clownish exorcist, reassembles herself like a dismembered doll, stapling her limbs stored in boxes in the afterlife back on one by one.<\/p>\n\n

From Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em> to Kylie Jenner, the myth of Frankenstein has never been so trendy<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n

Resuscitated like that, Monica Bellucci<\/strong> appears like the corpse bride from Corpse Bride<\/em> <\/strong>(2005) but above all, like Frankenstein\u2019s monster<\/strong> – a fashionable figure.<\/p>\n\n

Halloween 2022 already saw influencers and businesswomen Kylie Jenner<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kourtney Kardashian<\/strong><\/a> opting for the same costume as the bride of Frankenstein. Was offering a meta-reflection on the multiple surgical procedures the sisters have undergone their initial intent when dressing up as an altered creature? While we will never know whether or not their outfit was ironic, it certainly matches with the zeitgeist. The novel behind this cult myth has been fascinating pop culture for decades\u2026<\/p>\n\n

There are countless cinematic references to Mary Shelley<\/strong>\u2019s epistolary novel\u00a0Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1818). Films like\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>(1931),\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>(1935),\u00a0Young Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>(1974),\u00a0Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>(1994) by Kenneth Branagh, or Tim Burton\u2019s\u00a0Frankenweenie\u00a0<\/em>(2012) among others, have constantly revived the myth. But recently, the story of how Victor Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, crafted a \u201cmonster\u201d from dead flesh using electricity, seems more alive than ever.<\/p>\n\n

Last January, Greek director\u00a0Yo\u0301rgos La\u0301nthimos<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(The Favorite<\/em>,\u00a0The Lobster<\/em>) offered a feminine rewriting of the myth of Frankenstein with his baroque feature\u00a0Poor Things<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Oscar-winning actress\u00a0Emma Stone<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0played the role of the creature brought back to life and patched up with a baby\u2019s brain, while Willem Dafoe<\/strong> embodied the figure of the brilliant, yet mad and troubled surgeon.<\/p>\n\n

Jacob Elordi slips into the skin of the monster\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n

This year, the great Guillermo del Toro<\/strong> is back with a new feature titled Frankenstein <\/em><\/strong><\/a>and set for release on Netflix on November 7th, 2025. The cast is quite impressive and include Oscar Isaac<\/strong><\/a>, Jacob Elordi<\/strong><\/a> in the role of the monster, which required a powerful on-screen presence, and Mia Goth<\/strong><\/a> (X<\/em>, Pearl<\/em>, MaXXXine<\/em><\/a>).<\/p><\/p>\n\n

This well-crafted production, presented at the Venice Film Festival, unfolds as follows: \u201cEastern Europe, 19th century. Doctor Pretorious, who is tracking down Frankenstein, who is believed to have died in a fire forty years earlier. His goal is to continue the experiments of Doctor Frankenstein, the monster\u2019s creator<\/em>.\u201d<\/p> \n \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/article><\/p>\n\n

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s female version of Frankenstein <\/h2>\n\n

In March 2026, another film is set to overshadow Guillermo del Toro\u2019s feature. The Bride!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>by actress and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/strong>, will star Jessie Buckley<\/strong>,\u00a0Christian Bale<\/strong>,\u00a0Pene\u0301lope Cruz<\/strong><\/a>, Annette Bening<\/strong> and Peter Sarsgaard<\/strong>. Inspired by the 1935 film\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em>, the storyline focuses on a dead young woman: \u201cFrankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the help of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two bring a murdered young woman back to life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe role was a challenge in itself. It\u2019s not a character who has only been played by a handful of actors. Since Boris Karloff, there have been hundreds of interpretations. I went back to Mary Shelley\u2019s novel and tried to reinvent the character for The Bride!<\/em>,”\u00a0Christian Bale, who portrays the monster, shared in the columns of Le Devoir<\/em><\/p>\n\n

In addition to that, another project by Romanian director Radu Jude<\/strong>, starring Sebastian Stan<\/strong> (The Apprentice<\/em>), will be coming out soon. In the meantime, Zelda Williams’s feature Lisa Frankenstein<\/strong><\/em> (2024), starring Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, is available on Netflix<\/strong>. This teenage version of the myth is set in 1989 as \u201ca nerdy teenage girl accidentally brings back to life the corpse of a handsome young man from another time<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The story of Frankenstein has also been a source of inspiration for musicians. From\u00a0Over at the Frankenstein Place\u00a0<\/em>(1975), sung by Barry Bostwick, Richard O\u2019Brien and Susan Sarandon on the soundtrack of\u00a0The Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1975), to tracks by the New York Dolls, Death from Above, and Alice Cooper, the creature who escaped the mad scientist is everywhere.<\/p>\n\n

In 2022, singer\u00a0Rina Sawayama<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0entitled one of her tracks\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>and proclaimed: \u201cI don\u2019t wanna be a monster anymore<\/em>.\u201d She explained: \u201cI\u2019ve taken out the horror aspect of the story of Frankenstein. Prosaically, this song revolves around the idea of someone putting me back together and repairing me when I\u2019m broken. I\u2019m in pieces, only to be put back together by someone who reassembles the parts. It\u2019s a very human and realistic experience of rebuilding and creating a new me. That\u2019s why I sing, \u2018I don\u2019t want to be a monster anymore.\u2019 At the same time, it\u2019s pretty toxic to depend on someone to feel good, so these lyrics are a bit sad actually\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Another recent reference to Frankenstein? Rapper Tyler, The Creator<\/strong> crafted a Frankenstein-like alter ego to introduce his album Chromakopia<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, released in October 2024. Artist Paloma\u00a0<\/strong>released the music video for her track P.A.L.O.M.A<\/em>, directed alongside Rebeka Warrior and RAUMM, which hint at Myle\u0300ne Farmer<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Bride of Frankenstein<\/em>. It is no coincidence that queer artists, such as bisexual singer Rina Sawayama and drag queen Paloma, are the ones taking on the figure of Mary Shelley\u2019s fictional creature.<\/p>\n\n

Is Mary Shelley\u2019s monster a queer icon?<\/h2>\n\n

Several academics and media have analysed why Mary Shelley<\/strong>\u2019s novel, which she wrote at the age of 18, speaks so strongly to LGBT+ communities? The New Yorker<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>asked that same question in the article “How Queer is Frankenstein\u201d. <\/em>On the one hand, there are numerous allusions to the hidden homosexuality of the mad scientist who gives birth to a creature without going through a heteronormative relationship.<\/p>\n\n

On the other hand, the story of a monster being ostracized by villagers because of its difference resonates with the prejudices that queer people face. Besides, the fact that his soul doesn\u2019t seem to align with his physical appearance can also mirror the issues faced by transgender people.<\/p>\n\n

Despite the uncanny modernity of this 1818 novel, one has to keep in mind that the original tale is the revenge story of someone who was considered a freak because he didn\u2019t fit in. Victor Frankenstein abandoned his \u201cchild\u201d because he thought he was hideous. Except that the child was gifted with intelligence and eventually turned against his creator and the society that rejected him. In that sense, his life is a parable about otherness, and a symbol of the minorities\u2019 struggle to be accepted (and loved) as they are.<\/p>\n\n
