After her second album, the ambitious, epic and romantic <strong><em data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1368\">El mal querer<\/em><\/strong> (2018), which was a phenomenal critical and commercial success, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/why-we-love-rosalias-style\/\"><strong>Rosal\u00eda<\/strong><\/a> faced high expectations. Would the avant-garde Spanish singer, who fused flamenco with modern pop, abandon the daring mixes that made her famous in order to reinvent herself? The mixing phase alone took over nine months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2302\">During the various lockdowns, the singer-songwriter struggled with writer\u2019s block and tried to overcome it by reconnecting with <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/what-to-expect-from-frank-oceans-first-film-produced-by-a24\/\"><strong>Frank Ocean<\/strong><\/a> in a New York studio. She also brought in iconic producers <strong>The Neptunes<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/how-pharrell-williams-became-a-music-and-fashion-icon\/\"><strong>Pharrell Williams<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Chad Hugo<\/strong>) to work on her tracks. According to the 32-year-old Spanish singer, it&#8217;s her most personal album to date. In an interview with Apple Music 1, <strong>Rosal\u00eda<\/strong> described the record as a concept album shaped like a self-portrait. The artist, who had collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/billie-eilish-behind-the-soundtrack-of-the-next-james-bond-2\/\"><strong>Billie Eilish<\/strong><\/a>, then with <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/is-the-weeknds-new-album-dawn-fm-living-up-to-his-audiences-expectations\/\"><strong>The Weeknd<\/strong><\/a> on the track <em>La Fama<\/em> featured on that album, chose the title <em><strong>Motomami<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 \u201cmotorbike-chick\u201d \u2014 because it merges two words with contrasting energies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For her, the album explores two very distinct sides of her personality. \u201c<em>Moto<\/em>\u201d evokes Rosal\u00eda\u2019s experimental, shiny, and abrasive side, while \u201cm<em>ami<\/em>\u201d captures her more genuine, solemn, and vulnerable self. It\u2019s her way of expressing that she is total female artist, embodying all the obsessions of her generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mich\u00e8le Lamy and Patti Smith as inspirations for Motomami<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the name of the album is also a tribute to the Barcelona-born singer\u2019s mother, Pilar Tobella, a sort of Catalan<strong> Kris Jenner<\/strong> who runs an artist management company called <strong>Motomami S.L<\/strong>. Rosal\u00eda often compares herself to New York tailoring icon and counterfeit king <strong>Dapper Dan <\/strong>as they share a similar taste for remixing. The artist drew inspiration from other strong figures to write her album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the electrifying muses that fueled <em data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1559\">Motomami<\/em>, she often mentions salsa legend <strong>H\u00e9ctor Lavoe<\/strong>, singer <strong>Nina Simone<\/strong>, <strong>Patti Smith<\/strong>, <strong>Bach<\/strong>, <strong>Mich\u00e8le Lamy<\/strong>, <strong>Andrei Tarkovsky<\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/rosalia-the-flamenco-rnb-tornado-knighted-by-pedro-almodovar-2\/\"><strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/strong><\/a>. The latter indeed cast the neo-flamenco artist to sing in his film <em data-start=\"1754\" data-end=\"1770\">Pain and Glory<\/em> (2019). That desire guided her throughout the creation of the unpredictable <strong><em data-start=\"2242\" data-end=\"2252\">Motomami<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the support of her various producers, the artist weaves together a wide range of music genres. It felt like a homecoming, yet she also draws from Japanese culture \u2014 one of her tracks is titled <strong><em>Chicken <\/em><\/strong><em><strong>Teriyaki<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 and the English-speaking world in order to craft a hybrid aesthetic that borrows from the past and future. She effortlessly knows how to shift from playful tones to more melancholic moods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more impressively, the singer-songwriter never opts for the easy route. Each track is imbued with experimental sonic gems without ever sacrificing the art of the catchy melody.
