Production: Yoonjin Choi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keunmin Lee: the painter of sensations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\"><strong>Keunmin Lee<\/strong>\u2019s immersive paintings capture sensations experienced during delusional episodes, plunging us into the rich crimson hues of a body that knows neither boundaries nor externality. By sharing his personal experience of mental illness, he exposes the relationship between the body, social structures, and their systems of control.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/art\/art-art\/bill-skarsgard-pays-tribute-to-francis-bacon-in-an-exclusive-video-2\/\">Francis Bacon<\/a> saw painting as a way to \u201c<em>return fact onto the nervous system<\/em>,\u201d the same emotive nervous system we find at the heart of Lee\u2019s work. For Lee, it\u2019s a way of communicating the suffering body and the experience of violence without depicting it explicitly. It\u2019s also about capturing those moments when we go through, or are seized by, violence and the emotions it brings \u2013 in this instance, the violence of illness and clinical rationalization.&#13;\n&#13;\n<\/p><br\/><p class=\"p1\">Lee\u2019s bodies are eminently political. \u201c<em>I\u2019m interested in the violence of definition imposed by society. Photo: Keunmin Lee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Art as a response to excluding and deathly norms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">Inspired by <strong>Edward W. Sa\u00efd<\/strong>\u2019s writings on orientalism, Lee\u2019s approach is rooted in ideas about postcolonialism and Foucault\u2019s exploration of insanity as a construct of exclusion and vested interests. At a time when many political reforms are increasingly exclusionary, it seems crucial to give greater voice to those on the margins.&#13;\n&#13;\n<\/p><br\/><p class=\"p1\">Two decades ago, Lee was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a term that spans a broad spectrum ranging from instability in relationships to extreme sensitivity to the environment. Lee views vulnerability as a collective reality, bringing us face to face with the physical and emotional torments of the flesh in such a way that, when we contemplate his canvases, our bodies seem to enter another body (<em>Connected Skin<\/em> series, 2024).<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">Perhaps this is what a body cut off from all social context would look like, a kind of fragmentation, which is also found in the titles he gives his series and formats: <em>Body Construction<\/em>, <em>Connected Skin<\/em>, <em>Psychiatrist\u2019s Head<\/em>, <em>Organic Plate<\/em>. Blood is an essential component, a \u201c<em>bridge between a fantasized and a real space<\/em>.\u201d Lee accidentally injured himself during delusional episodes; the <em>Connected Skin<\/em> series features networks of blood vessels and red drippings, like so many threads linking viewer and artist.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;<em>Incorporating my hallucinations into my artistic world (\u2026)\u00a0gave them subjectivity and deeper meaning<\/em>.&#8221; \u2013 Keunmin Lee<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">Some of the small and medium-sized canvases include glued-on plastic film in apparent coagulation (<em>Organic Plate<\/em>, 2024). Painting helps free him from the oppression of his diagnosis and symptoms. \u201c<em>For me, incorporating my hallucinations into my artistic world elevated them beyond mere symptoms of an illness. It gave them subjectivity and deeper meaning<\/em>.\u201d Only his drawings have a more personal vocation: rarely shown to the public, they form an extremely meticulous \u201c<em>daily pathology diary<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast to the lengthy process of oils, Lee seeks the immediacy of surrealist automatic drawing in order to keep idea and gesture in the same temporality. Lee\u2019s art is an introspective and emancipatory process; by keeping this \u201cpathological diary\u201d he gives substance to experiences that escape societal norms and appeal to our deepest
