And then there are those we no longer dared to hope for. Clipse, the cult <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/category\/culture-en\/music\/\">music<\/a> duo from Virginia Beach made up of the Thornton brothers \u2013 <strong>Malice<\/strong> and <strong>Pusha T<\/strong> \u2013 belongs to both categories. Sixteen years after <em data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"760\">Til The Casket Drops<\/em> (2009), they\u2019re back with <em data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"808\">Let God Sort Em Out <\/em>(2025), a new record that revives their signature aesthetic without being trapped in nostalgia.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formed in the late 1990s, Clipse quickly became one of the greatest duos in American rap. Their debut album <em data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1031\">Lord Willin\u2019<\/em> (2002), produced by the <strong>Neptunes<\/strong>, was an instant classic. A blend of intergalactic beats and dark tales of drug dealing, street life, and thwarted ambition. With <em data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1213\">Hell Hath No Fury<\/em> (2006), the brothers doubled down &#8211; suffocating atmosphere, sharp lyrics. The project became an undisputed reference in <em>coke rap<\/em>, a subgenre where the streets become an economy of survival, a space of style, and a personal faith even.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after their last album released in 2009, their paths diverged. Pusha T&#8217;s career skyrocketed and he became known for his legendary beefs with Drake in 2018 and acclaimed solo albums <em data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1618\">Daytona<\/em> (2018) and <em data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1645\">It\u2019s Almost Dry<\/em> (2022). Meanwhile, Malice stepped away. He converted, left rap behind, and became No Malice. Their joint reappearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/non-classifiee\/kanye-west-invites-justin-bieber-marilyn-manson-and-roddy-ricch-to-his-sunday-service\/\">Kanye West<\/a>\u2019s <em data-start=\"1783\" data-end=\"1798\">Jesus Is King<\/em> (2020) was just temporary.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ecIH-4RbbOk&amp;list=RDecIH-4RbbOk&amp;start_radio=1\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ecIH-4RbbOk&amp;list=RDecIH-4RbbOk&amp;start_radio=1<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Chains &amp; Whips <\/em>(2025) by Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T and Malice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prestige and provocation: Clipse\u2019s poised comeback <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything changed in Paris in 2023. On the runway of Louis Vuitton\u2019s Men\u2019s Spring\/Summer show, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/pharrell-williams-celebrates-india-at-the-louis-vuitton-mens-spring-summer-show\/\">Pharrell Williams<\/a> &#8211; artistic director of the house and longtime producer for the duo &#8211; premieres their unreleased track <em data-start=\"372\" data-end=\"388\">Chains &amp; Whips<\/em>. A dark ego trip laced with references to American slavery. The announcement of the new album came late on, but its release on July 11th, 2025, unfolded like a major event. The first single, <em data-start=\"566\" data-end=\"576\">So Be It<\/em>, is a diss track directed at <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/travis-scott-launches-his-label-cactus-jack-records-and-other-revelations-2\/\">Travis Scott<\/a>, who&#8217;s described as a\u00a0spineless opportunist.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another controversy is the rumour of censorship around <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/kendrick-lamar-named-chanels-new-brand-ambassador\/\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>\u2019s verse on <em data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"740\">Chains &amp; Whips<\/em>. According to Pusha, Def Jam wanted to cut his most scathing lines. The result? Clipse walked out on the label. It was ultimately Roc Nation, Jay-Z\u2019s camp, that brought the album to life. A change of team that underlines the tensions between two schools of rap. On one side, sanitized pop-rap, and on the other, raw and credible writing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pharrell Williams oversaw the entire project. The album was even recorded in Louis Vuitton\u2019s studios in Paris. A case of street rap colliding with luxury in a fascinating, yet divisive alliance.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=URlPXepBZdo\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=URlPXepBZdo<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>So Be It <\/em>(2025) by Clipse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clipse: a dense, brutal and imperfect album<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite their age &#8211; Malice is 52 and Pusha T is 48 &#8211; Clipse have lost none of their greatness. Malice\u2019s voice is deeper now and carries a disillusioned wisdom drawn from his spiritual retreat. As for Pusha, he stays true to himself &#8211; arrogant, cut-throat, a tad theatrical. Among the featured artists, <strong>Kendrick Lamar<\/strong> and <strong>Nas<\/strong> shine, while <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/tyler-the-creator-goes-back-to-the-roots-of-hip-hop-with-dont-tap-the-glass\/\">Tyler, The Creator<\/a> twists the knife.<strong> John Legend<\/strong> adds a slightly too-polished melodramatic note.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some have criticized Pharrell for delivering an overly polished production. The Neptunes of <em data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"1865\">Hell Hath No Fury <\/em>(2006) unleashed chaos through the loop. But, this album\u2019s refined intent, recorded at Vuitton studios, mixed in Paris, with obsessively crafted visuals, has smoothed away some of the rawness.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, despite its flaws, <em data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2102\">Let God Sort Em Out<\/em> makes a strong impression. First, for its coherence &#8211; thirteen tracks, no filler. Then, for its narrative. Clipse tackles money, God, power, and family with sharp, deeply referential, often funny punchlines. Finally, for its ambition. In an era where rap albums are often reduced to playlists, Clipse deliver a dense, deliberate body of work.
