The <em>enfant terrible<\/em> of rap is now standing before the court of social media\u2026 In some pictures, <strong>Tyler, The Creator<\/strong> appears in whiteface or dressed in an outfit reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan in scenes considered provocative and offensive. Several tweets from 2011 to 2012 have resurfaced, in which the American artist expressed hatred toward rapper <strong>Wale<\/strong> and criticised his own white fans.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"1334\">But placing these provocations back in their original context radically alters their interpretation. In the early 2010s, Tyler played an intentionally outrageous character, heir to both punk and satirical rap, flouting norms of decency to expose social hypocrisies. Since then, his body of work from <em data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1022\">Flower Boy<\/em> (2017) to <em data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1058\">Call Me If You Get Lost<\/em> (2021) reveals a deep transformation, both musically and personally, marked by vulnerability, introspection, and constant reinvention. Digging up those comments without acknowledging their provocative nature and the context is to ignore how far he has come.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially since the codes of subversion have changed. What once fell under artistic shock tactics is now deemed unacceptable. In a culture obsessed with transparency, embodying a character \u2014 especially one flirting with symbolic violence \u2014 has become a risky stance. Fiction is too quickly conflated with its author.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kZfz5UlsHlQ\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kZfz5UlsHlQ<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tyler, The Creator \u2013 <em>Darling<\/em> (2025)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h2><strong>Tyler, The Creator: from <em data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"493\">Chromakopia<\/em> to redefining attitude<\/strong><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>With his album <em data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"555\">Chromakopia<\/em> (2024), <a data-mce-href=\"\/?p=671181\" href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/chromakopia-a-look-back-at-tyler-the-creators-latest-album-and-his-paris-concert\/\">Tyler, The Creator<\/a> offered a piece of introspective and sensory <a data-mce-href=\"\/?cat_ID=3177\" href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/category\/culture-en\/music\/\">music<\/a>. He appeared as a sculptor of worlds more than ever with yet another concept work on the verge of nostalgic synth-pop and contemplative soul rap. Carried by rumbling brass, his album got a warm reception by both critics and the public and marked a moment of serenity after the emotional rollercoaster of <em data-start=\"957\" data-end=\"963\">IGOR<\/em> (2019) and the explosive pastiche <em data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1023\">Call Me If You Get Lost<\/em> (2021).<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The artist&#8217;s incredible world tour for <em data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1109\">Chromakopia<\/em> kicked off last February 2025 and extended that immersive experience. The rapper refined his art for staging, mixing aesthetic videos, signature outfits, a mask paying tribute to West African traditions, and a surprising green metallic box. This is exactly the spirit behind <em data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1374\">Don\u2019t Tap the Glass<\/em> (2025), a surprise record that strips away all narrative excess to let a raw, almost primal energy burst forth. If <em data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1504\">Chromakopia<\/em> was made to be seen, <em data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1547\">Don\u2019t Tap the Glass<\/em> is meant to be felt.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pmlqEKklWqs\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pmlqEKklWqs\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pmlqEKklWqs<\/a><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Stop Playing With Me<\/em> (2025) by Tyler, The Creator.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rtecenter\">The surprise comeback of the king of staging in 2025<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The announcement of this new release was brief and intense. Teased just four days before coming out, the record was presented as a manifesto &#8211; three rules, a cryptic name and a monumental statue. Outside New York\u2019s Barclays Center, a sculpture locked in a glass box revealed Tyler\u2019s new persona, \u201cBig Poe.\u201d Half-tribute, half-pastiche, he strikes the same arm pose as <strong>Ludacris<\/strong> in <em data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"567\">Get Back<\/em> (2005), sports <strong>Run DMC<\/strong>&#8216;s iconic grills and sneakers\u00a0and wears red pants reminiscent of<strong> LL Cool J<\/strong> during his <em data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"701\">Bigger and Deffer<\/em> era (1987).<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>But this isn\u2019t all about aesthetics. These visuals convey a clear message. That of an artist refusing to be touched or diminished. The implicit message of the title <em data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"900\">Don\u2019t Tap the Glass <\/em>is a literal warning evoking the exhibition of a being turned into a work of art. \u201c<em>Only Speak in Glory. Leave Your Baggage at Home<\/em>\u201d &#8211; a guiding line that steers away from introspection in favour of self-celebration.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tyler, The Creator orchestrates a new era by flipping the script of the music industry. Here, there&#8217;s no slow build-up and no cryptic teasers. Its impact likely lies in its stylistic foundation, which is both regional and historical. The opening track introduces a robotic voice, which lays out the three commandments of this new aesthetic: \u201c<em>Body Movement. No Sitting Still.<\/em>\u201d The tone is set. It is not a record designed to think, but to move.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The record draws its energy from the history of hip-hop, particularly from the 1980s and 1990s. The sampled chorus from <strong>Busta Rhymes<\/strong>\u2019s <em data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1920\">Pass the Courvoisier Part II<\/em> (2002) in the track <em data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"1950\">Big Poe<\/em> sets the tone. It\u2019s a clear nod to boom bap, but also to New Orleans bounce, West Coast G-funk, and the electronic pulse of Detroit and Milwaukee clubs. <em data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2124\">Sugar on My Tongue <\/em>leans more towards Italo disco, while <em data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2175\">Sucka Free<\/em> takes us back to the plush grooves of his fellow artist <strong>Nate Dogg<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>Tyler, The Creator doesn\u2019t simply revisit these codes. He merges them with his own language. Take <em data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2359\">Stop Playing With Me<\/em> for instance. A track that is both simple and magnetic, where he dances alone between two giant speakers. Instead, he leaned into exuberant synthesizers, even if it meant minimizing the presence of his raspy voice. He has often been criticized for his repeated use of the slur \u201cfaggot\u201d and for his misogynistic lyrics, staging violence against women on several occasions.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>An eternal teenager, the Californian rapper provokes and rejects American marketing norms in aesthetic music videos that are often borderline scandalous. One remembers the video for <em data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"689\">Who Dat Boy<\/em> (2017), featuring his longtime friend <strong>A$AP Rocky<\/strong>, in which he performs a white face transplant on himself. A far cry from the candy-colored visuals of <em data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"845\">After the Storm<\/em> (2018) by <strong>Kali Uchis<\/strong>, in which he also appeared. Long before <em data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"919\">Flower Boy<\/em> in 2017, this graphic designer, director, and screenwriter, now 34, was already championing an eccentric and spectacular musical
