Courtesy of the artist and Modern Art, London.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mohammed Sami, a painter who translates war traumas<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">A painter of allegories, <strong>Mohammed Sami<\/strong> gives shape to memories of war and trauma. Born in Baghdad in 1984, he studied fine art and spent two years working for the Iraqi Ministry of Culture before leaving the country for Sweden and then London.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">Though autobiographical \u2013 he draws on his own experiences to recapture images of the Iraq war \u2013 his large-format compositions are disconcerting in their deliberate refusal to facilitate any linear reading. With his close-ups that often seem too close, and his framing that prevents an understanding of the full perspective, he creates the impression of a state of mind shattered into a thousand fragments. Courtesy of the artist and Modern Art, London.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A harrowing meditation on the ravages of armed conflict<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"p1\">The curator and art adviser <strong>Eve Th\u00e9rond<\/strong> speaks of \u201c<em>melancholy and edification<\/em>\u201d when contemplating his paintings, which she discovered in 2022 at <strong>Modern Art<\/strong> in London. \u201c<em>Devoid of any human presence, his cryptic interiors \u2013 the ghosts of forgotten pasts \u2013 speak to me in whispers<\/em>.\u201d His oeuvre, she says, \u201c<em>is a poignant, visceral meditation on the ravages of war, exile, and the erosion of memory.
