For the Greek filmmaker&#8217;s bold, new project, the American actress even shaved her head to play a powerful woman targeted by conspiracy theorists. The premise? \u201c<em>Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><i>Bugonia<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also marks the return of another regular collaborator of <strong>Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos<\/strong>. <strong>Jesse Plemons<\/strong>, who won the award for Best Actor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/cannes-2024-the-most-quirky-moments-of-the-festival\/\">2024 Cannes Film Festival<\/a>, will also star in the film<\/span> as<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the conspiracy theorists.<\/span> Alongside him, y<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oung actor <strong>Aidan Delbis<\/strong> <\/span>will make his <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major acting debut. What we do know at the moment is that it\u2019s being developed by the studio CJ ENM (<\/span><strong><i>Parasite<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in collaboration with director <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/austin-butler-emma-stone-joaquin-phoenix-ari-asters-insane-new-cast\/\">Ari Aster<\/a> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midsommar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hereditary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). As for the screenplay, it is being handled by Will Tracy, who previously worked with HBO on the series <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/who-is-the-ex-trader-turned-composer-behind-the-credits-of-succession\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Succession<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2018\u20132023). The plot is inspired by the 2003 South Korean comedy <\/span><strong><i>Save the Green Planet<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Jang Joon-hwan. One question remains: how much liberty will <strong>Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos<\/strong> take regarding the source material?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the scenes, however, the production of <\/span><strong><i>Bugonia<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was anything but smooth. Initially, the director had planned to shoot parts of the film on the Athenian Acropolis<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span>Unfortunately,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Central Archaeological Council of Greece denied his request. The institution refused to grant L\u00e1nthimos <strong>permission to film<\/strong> there. Ever since <\/span><strong><i>The Favourite<\/i><\/strong>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which earned Olivia Colman an Oscar in 2018, <strong>Y\u00f3rgos L\u00e1nthimos<\/strong> and <strong>Emma Stone<\/strong> have embarked on a series of successful collaborations. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/interview-with-emma-stone-the-magnetic-star-of-the-sublime-and-wacky-poor-things\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor Things<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned Emma Stone, 35, her second Oscar in 2024, the duo continues to push boundaries with increasingly daring projects. A bet that has paid off so far, especially with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinds of Kindness <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2024), a pitch-black comedy, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleak<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2022), a silent short film presented as a theatrical performance in New York only.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently in post-production, <\/span><strong><i>Bugonia<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marks the fifth collaboration between the Greek director and t<\/span>he <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actress. A partnership that benefits both the actress, who steps far outside her comfort zone<\/span>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a filmmaker<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always thirsty for experimentation. A regular at the <strong>Venice Film Festival<\/strong>, the latter might well present <\/span><strong><i>Bugonia<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Lagoon this year. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/yorgos-lanthimos-plans-assassin-thriller-fatale\/?utm_source=www.theinsneider.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=oscar-plea-i-preferred-anora-to-the-brutalist-but-it-doesn-t-have-the-weight-a-best-picture-winner-should\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Film Stage<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prolific Greek filmmaker\u2019s new film could be an adaptation of the crime novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, originally published by Jean-Patrick Manchette in 1977. Very little is known about the film right now, except that it is expected to feature a professional killer operating in a port town.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big question is, which actress will land this already intriguing role? Many expect Emma Stone to take on the lead for yet another collaboration with the Greek director. Speaking to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Num\u00e9ro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the release of <\/span><strong><i>Poor Things<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Emma Stone talked about her relationship with the filmmaker: \u201c<em>We understand each other. We don\u2019t need to talk too much about things. He doesn\u2019t like to intellectualize, which is wonderful because neither do I. It\u2019s really helpful, whether we\u2019re discussing a character\u2019s physicality or just exploring rhythms and trying things out. The theatre released is scheduled for November 5th, 2025.
