One can think of the Paddington by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/bottega-veneta-chloe-and-valentino-3-fashion-houses-contributing-to-more-sustainability-2\/\">Chlo\u00e9<\/a>, the City by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/what-to-expect-from-the-collaboration-between-britney-spears-and-balenciaga\/\">Balenciaga<\/a>, the Speedy by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/louis-vuitton-takes-over-the-palais-des-papes-for-its-cruise-2026-show\/\">Louis Vuitton<\/a>, the Birkin by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/15-accessories-spotted-at-the-hermes-spring-summer-2022-show\/\">Herm\u00e8s<\/a> or the 2.55 by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/an-ode-to-la-dolce-vita-at-the-chanel-cruise-2025-2026-show\/\">Chanel<\/a> &#8211; this enthusiasm is also fueling a new market. That of <strong>auctions<\/strong>, which offer <strong>rare<\/strong> or <strong>limited-edition<\/strong> pieces, often sourced from the finest private collections, like at Christie&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such is the case with the second chapter of Christie\u2019s sale of historic <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/what-should-we-remember-from-the-louis-vuitton-show\/\">Louis Vuitton<\/a> trunks. <strong>Lucile Andreani<\/strong>, head of the expanding department of \u201cHandbags and Accessories\u201d led the first one in July 2024. That first auction reached record, and rather unexpected figures &#8211; \u20ac2.3 million were auctioned off from a total of 98 lots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>This market turned out to be much bigger than we had imagined<\/em>,\u201d she tells us enthusiastically as the new auction of 104 pieces is about to start. \u201c<em>We\u2019re holding more and more handbag auctions, but what\u2019s unique about this one is that all the lots come from one single collector, who is passionate about Louis Vuitton trunks. He developed a keen interest for the art of travel, the craftsmanship of the French house, and the stories these pieces tell us. There\u2019s a sort of chronology that emerges from these suitcases. It was the era of explorers, of adventurers setting off to tropical countries to study them<\/em>,\u201d the Christie\u2019s specialist explains. At a time when the French colonial empire was at its height, new forms of transport were emerging. Members of the military, civil servants, and officials were moving or traveling to Tunis, Oran, Asia, or India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each year, tens of thousands boarded ships heading for lands then considered as \u201cexotic.\u201d But their title required that these travellers brought everything they needed to maintain their social standing both on board and upon arrival. Along with outfits suited to the climatic conditions of their destination. \u201c<em>Louis Vuitton was the first to design trunks made of metal<\/em>,\u201d <strong>Lucile Andreani<\/strong> tells us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>This zinc design represents both the luxury of that time and the innovation of the trunk maker. Thanks to its coating, it was completely airtight and keeping your belongings protected from moisture, heat, dust, and the elements<\/em>,\u201d she continues. A gem of luggage design, Louis Vuitton\u2019s zinc trunk was launched in the late 19th century. And it quickly became a must-have piece. While the version made for actress <strong>Greta Garbo<\/strong> (1905\u20131990) is well known, the very first piece was created for <strong>Lily Pons<\/strong>, the French singer and 1930s Hollywood superstar. \u201c<em>To me, this trunk represents old Hollywood glamour. It reminds me of the wardrobes of today\u2019s celebrities, who all have the designated compartments needed for their handbags, shoes, or jewelry<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like most stars at that time, her wardrobe was scrutinized and discussed in every tabloid and fashion magazine. Traveling with a vast array of outfits for her music tours across the United States and Europe, she needed to carry and protect her finest ensembles. That\u2019s where <strong>Gaston-Louis Vuitton<\/strong> stepped in. Close to the celebrities of the time, he designed sumptuous trunks tailored to the needs of his prestigious clientele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carrying (and protecting) 36 pairs of shoes\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>As practical as this piece is, it is more of a whim. It allowed the singer to carry 36 pairs of shoes.<\/em>\u201d A fashion version of some sorts of the writing desk. \u201cT<em>his design was quickly adapted for other actresses and clients who traveled often and wanted their wardrobe at hand. Like a portable closet<\/em>,\u201d Lucile Andreani says with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the women\u2019s press of the time, this trunk was hailed as \u201c<em>the ultimate symbol of Parisian chic<\/em>,\u201d and even described as \u201c<em>the must-have accessory of the traveling Parisian<\/em>\u201d (extract from <em data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1535\">Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks<\/em>, 2010, p. 271). Officially registered by the house in 1908, the so-called \u201c<strong>Aero Trunk<\/strong><\/em>\u201d was initially designed to be attached to the basket of a hot-air balloon. Despite it basic appearance, this suitcase stood out for its unprecedented lightness at the time. \u201c<em>Louis Vuitton wanted to create trunks that were unsinkable, watertight, and wouldn\u2019t add too much weight to a balloon<\/em>,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As air travel developed, airplanes soon replaced hot-air balloons. The French house\u2019s trunks became essential. Lightweight and compact, they weighed 26 kilograms only when packed. A technical feat for the 1930s that established Louis Vuitton as a leader in that industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ancestor of carry-on luggage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 1927 advertisement in <em data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"943\">L\u2019Illustration<\/em> illustrates this innovation: \u201c<em>Why pay excess baggage fees when there are marvellous trunks that, when full, don\u2019t weigh more than 30 kilos?<\/em>\u201d (extract from <em data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1123\">Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks<\/em>, 2010, p. 59). \u201c<em>This piece is truly the ancestor of the carry-on. But because of its fragility, it didn&#8217;t stand the test of time as opposed to other trunks. That\u2019s why so few remain today<\/em>,\u201d the Christie\u2019s specialist adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>These types of trunks are very rare. They reflect how society evolved and traveled at that time. It\u2019s fascinating to see how these objects were used before, and how they are used today, as decoration. While we no longer travel with these rather heavy and elaborate trunks, we have revamped them as mini-bars, coffee tables\u2026 They are luxury pieces with a unique aesthetic and a compelling
