Emma Mackey: A versatile actress from Sex Education to Eiffel<\/b><\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to find new ways to introduce the Franco-British actress Emma Mackey<\/a><\/strong>, who graces the covers of most international magazines and appears in the latest Hollywood productions. At just 29 years old, the actress first made a name for herself for her performance in Sex Education<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in 2019. Although her breakout role remains memorable, she has left the hit Netflix series to pursue new roles, which she\u2019s been stacking up since then.

Far from the pink hair and grunge look of the rebellious Maeve, the breakout character of the teen show about sexuality, the versatile actress donned a crinoline to star in Eiffel<\/strong><\/em> in 2021. Then, a year later, she slipped into a sultry blood-red gown as she plays a murderess in Death on the Nile<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British actress plays the lead in Ella McCay<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, she portrayed the 19th-century writer Emily Bront\u00eb in Emily, before appearing in the global phenomenon Barbie<\/a><\/strong><\/em> alongside Margot Robbie<\/a><\/strong> – an actress whom Emma Mackey<\/strong> has often been compared to. This year, she takes on the lead in Hot Milk<\/strong><\/em>, a drama by Rebecca Lenkiewicz<\/strong>, where she stars alongside Vicky Krieps<\/strong>. Trapped in a complicated relationship with her mother, the British star spends the summer in southern Spain, where she meets Ingrid. She finds herself drawn to Ingrid in a way that shakes up her daily mother-daughter dynamics. Since February 5nd, 2026, the actress has been shining in a film of an entirely different kind. She portrays a governor of a small American state, propelled into that role when her mentor (Albert Brooks<\/strong>) accepts a position as Secretary of State in Washington.

In short, a wide range of roles, which Emma Mackey<\/strong> conducted with perfection. When asked how she chose her roles during our Parisian encounter in 2023, the Franco-British actress replied with a laugh: \u201c<\/span>Randomly<\/span><\/i>.\u201d She then added: \u201c<\/span>If the script speaks to me, if it aligns with who I am, I accept. I follow my intuition<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Directed by Australian filmmaker Frances O\u2019Connor<\/strong> – thus marking her debut feature film – Emma Mackey<\/strong> captivated the audience as the young, unconventional writer, unable to conform to the strict expectations imposed by British society in the late 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often filmed in close-up, her face dominates much of the film. Joyful, anxious, serious, provocative, in love, possessed\u2026 The actress showcases a wide range of emotions, through her dark eyebrows and intense gaze. \u201c<\/span>It was important for me to give life to this historical character<\/span><\/i>,\u201d she explains. \u201c<\/span>Frances and I didn\u2019t want to turn Emily Bront\u00eb<\/strong> into some sort of boring, untouchable statue<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vulnerability that Emma Mackey manages to infuse into her character – reminiscent of her tough, yet soft character in <\/span>Sex Education<\/i><\/strong> – makes Emily Bront\u00eb feel human, almost tangible, distancing her from the famous, marble-etched historical figure. Indeed, while the real Emily Bront\u00eb did exist, the film\u2019s intention is not to present her biography. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s not a biopic, I\u2019ve said that many times already<\/span><\/i>,\u201d the Franco-British actress emphasizes. \u201c<\/span>The sooner you realize that, the easier it is to follow the story that is told<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the films and series I\u2019ve worked on were chosen because they made sense to me<\/em>.\u201d Emma Mackey<\/strong><\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>What drew me to this role?\u201d<\/span><\/i> Emma Mackey<\/strong> repeats, amused. \u201c<\/span>Hmm\u2026 that was a long time ago now<\/span><\/i>.\u201d It\u2019s true that she received the script for <\/span>Emily<\/span><\/i> three years earlier. In other words, before all her other major roles on the silver screen. \u201c<\/span>At the time, I had never really played a leading role. So, I was excited at the idea of immersing myself so intensely in a character<\/span><\/i>.\u201d However, she had only six weeks of filming to slip into Emily\u2019s skin, confined with the rest of the cast and the costumes in a house in Yorkshire – just like the real Bront\u00eb family.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another common characteristic Emma Mackey shares with her character? A passion for literature. Like Emily Bront\u00eb<\/strong>, she is a literature addict. French baccalaur\u00e9at with honours and classical literature graduate from the University of Leeds. She is completely bilingual and has been reading books in both French and English since childhood. She even quotes Sartre in interviews (\u201c<\/span>Existence precedes essence<\/span><\/i>\u201d) to describe Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s work, <\/span>Wuthering Heights<\/span><\/i> (1847). She also finds that the scenes depicting French lessons featuring William Weightman and Emily are the most interesting ones in the film and represent pivotal moments in their relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This literary ivory tower is reminiscent of her own personal bubble, away from social media. Since the end of 2022, Emma Mackey<\/strong> has indeed been absent from any social platforms, like Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok, which she decided to quit entirely. Very discreet, she avoids paparazzi and tabloid media between her two homes, London and Marseille.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when asked about the emotional preparation for the role of Emily Bront\u00eb<\/strong>, she answers in a tone that oscillates between defensiveness and humor. \u201c<\/span>I followed the script and the director. Everything was there to make the process easier. I\u2019m not about to dig into my personal traumas either!<\/span><\/i>\u201d Despite her status as an international star, the Franco-British actress keeps her life private, her spontaneity and authenticity – qualities that seem to cling to her as much as to the characters she embodies. \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m not hiding. In <\/span><\/i>Emily<\/span>, I really opened up. And it cost me a lot. This freedom, Emma Mackey<\/strong> also grants herself in her career choices, like her decision to leave <\/span>Sex Education<\/i><\/strong> in order to fully express herself in different projects. \u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve never said yes to things just for the sake of it, that\u2019s really not my style. All the films and series I\u2019ve worked on were chosen because they made sense to me at a specific moment in my life.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she started out, <\/span>Sex Education<\/span><\/i> served as an unparalleled springboard in her new acting career. And above all, the series promoted values that were dear to her. \u201c<\/span>Now, I mostly want to give my time to projects that are worth it<\/span><\/i>,\u201d Emma Mackey explains with determination in her voice. Due to the \u201cbad timing\u201d of the announcement of her departure from <\/span>Sex Education<\/i><\/strong> after season 4, which was made on the day of the ceremony. \u201c<\/span>They were clever<\/span><\/i>,\u201d she says with biting humor about the Netflix<\/strong> team. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s just a bit disappointing because I won an award and the questions I got afterward were almost all about <\/span><\/i>Sex Education.\u201d The reasons for her departure? Emma Mackey was tired of playing a teenager when she is now a grown-up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actress attributes her Bafta win to all the teams that gave her a chance, from Netflix producers to her theater professor at the University of Leeds. \u201c<\/span>I stand on the shoulders of everyone who supported me<\/span><\/i>,\u201d she says, with an eloquence that she admits was lacking during her acceptance speech as she was caught in a whirlwind of emotions. \u201c<\/span>I panicked at that moment. But heights don\u2019t intimidate Emma Mackey<\/strong>, who keeps climbing the ladder of the film industry with her new ambitious role in film <\/span>Ella McCay<\/strong><\/em> (2025), alongside the acclaimed Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong>. Perhaps, she will take on the role of director one day, a position that she envisions wearing in a few years. \u201c<\/span>I have no pretensions, but the desire is there.
