A feature in which cinema itself becomes the beating heart and main narrative. Except that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0we might be witnessing its eulogy in\u00a0<strong><i>Resurrection<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a necessity for us to believe in its rebirth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A far cry from the virtuoso comedy of the American director, Chinese gifted director <strong>Bi Gan<\/strong>, who already made <\/span><strong><i>Kaili Blues <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long Day\u2019s Journey into Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now delivers a deeply personal and beautiful reverie. Embodied by Chinese superstar and <strong>TFBoys member<\/strong> <strong>Jackson Yee<\/strong>, the strange fate of the protagonist now takes shape. He is the <strong>last man capable of dreaming<\/strong> in a world that has forgotten how. He becomes the \u201c<strong>cinema-man<\/strong>,\u201d a monstrous figure. Well-known for her roles with <strong>Hou Hsiao-hsien<\/strong>, <strong>Shu Qi<\/strong> portrays a woman who enters his cinematic dreams and guides us through them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We embark on a journey through the 20th century, tracing both <strong>the history of China and of the seventh art<\/strong>. As the film progresses, we begin to decipher the enigma of its construction and the effects it has on us. We drift through an ocean of surprises and symbols as <strong>Bi Gan stimulates our senses<\/strong>. It is at times transparent, or completely impenetrable. Yet, that doesn\u2019t mean it goes on the wrong track. The <strong>masterpiece we might have hoped for<\/strong> is not always present, but is it really a bad thing when the attempt is so vibrant, obsessive and spacey?<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bi Gan<\/strong>, 35, demonstrates formidable ambition. He works <strong>the films before him and cinema<\/strong> like clay, seeking to extract a <strong>unique creation<\/strong>, a light torn from the darkness of a world, which perhaps has lost faith in cinema. Yet, it also imagines <strong>the future of cinema<\/strong>, free from linear narratives and using <strong>special effects<\/strong> to poeticize the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, <\/span><strong><i>Resurrection<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is some kind of grand, impossible remake. Perhaps the last film in the history of <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/category\/culture-en\/movies\/\">cinema<\/a>, but also the very first one. A sort of primitive, futuristic gesture. To not see it appear in the list of contenders for the <strong>Jury Prize<\/strong>, awarded by <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/cannes-2025-jafar-panahis-it-was-just-an-accident-awarded-the-palme-dor-by-juliette-binoche\/\"><strong>Juliette Binoche<\/strong><\/a>, would have been disappointing. Fortunately, the feature mesmerised the audience and won the <strong>Jury&#8217;s Special Prize<\/strong> during the closing ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Resurrection
