In the aftermath of <strong>Black Monday<\/strong> in 1987, the eccentric sophistication of the 1980s embodied by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/jean-paul-gaultier-rents-out-vintage-pieces-and-unveils-a-punk-inspired-collection\/\">Jean Paul Gaultier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/thierry-mugler-at-the-musee-des-arts-decoratifs-meeting-with-the-legendary-designer\/\">Thierry Mugler<\/a><\/strong>, or<strong> Gianni <\/strong>and<strong> Donatella Versace<\/strong> began to give way to a darker, more minimalist fashion. Masters of anti-fashion, like <strong>Helmut Lang<\/strong>,<strong> Jil Sander<\/strong>, <strong>Rei Kawakubo<\/strong>,<strong> Yohji Yamamoto<\/strong>, and, of course,<strong> Martin Margiela<\/strong>, gained prominence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among these established designers and emerging talents, one British designer remains unapologetically true to herself. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/art-design\/photography\/the-madness-of-vivienne-westwood-as-seen-by-juergen-teller-in-258-pages-2\/\">Vivienne Westwood<\/a><\/strong> revamps historical costumes and extends traditional tailoring through her bold collections. In addition to that, she welcomes punk, trash, and fetishism into her creative universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the very start, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/the-vivienne-westwood-show-by-andreas-kronthaler-spring-summer-2022\/\">Vivienne Westwood<\/a><\/strong> has rejected the establishment and its conventions. When restraint dominated the runways, she delivered wild silhouettes. From <strong>Fragonard<\/strong>&#8216;s paintings to portraits of <strong>Madame de Pompadour<\/strong> and opulent furnishings, the British designer was captivated by 18th-century artworks. <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Boucher<\/strong>, the French master of ornamental style, held a rare fascination for the punk designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many pieces from the<strong> Fall\/Winter 1990 collection<\/strong>, such as pearl necklaces, vivid, crinoline-like petticoats, long coats, or fingerless gloves, were a clear reference to Boucher\u2019s canvases. \u201c<em>I felt something was missing. In a way, the paintings themselves. I chose the painter who most epitomizes the decorative movement, Boucher, and his most typical painting, The Sleeping Shepherdess,\u201d <\/em>Vivienne Westwood explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, she chose to print that painting onto a series of corsets. The idyllic setting and heightened sensuality of the scene are intensified by the inherently erotic nature of the<strong> <\/strong>garment, a signature of the Westwood style since 1987. The house dedicated an entire exhibition to corsets in 2023 in its store on Rue Saint-Honor\u00e9 in Paris. So much so that these corsets \u2014 now worn by singer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/fka-twigs-announces-two-films-and-an-album-by-the-end-of-2025\/\">FKA Twigs<\/a><\/strong> and model <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/bella-hadid-anok-yai-when-models-walk-the-runway-in-music-videos\/\">Bella Hadid<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 are fetching sky-high prices in vintage boutiques and online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although <strong>Vivienne Westwood<\/strong> reissued some pieces, along with a capsule collection inspired by the originals in 2020, the corset has now become a work of art in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the <strong>MAD<\/strong>, the garment received the recognition it deserved in 2025 through the exhibition <em><strong>Rococo &amp; Co.
