Each one of his six features premiered at major festivals, from Durban to Sundance, Venice and Cannes.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1272\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1272\">In 2025, the South-African director returns to the Croisette, after winning the <strong>Queer Palm<\/strong> for his second film <em data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"1138\">Beauty <\/em>in 2011. His sixth production, <strong><em data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1183\">The History of Sound<\/em><\/strong>, was in the official competition at the <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/cannes-2025-scarlett-johanssons-surprising-directorial-debut\/\"><strong>2025<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/cannes-2025-scarlett-johanssons-surprising-directorial-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Cannes Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, and is currently out in theaters. The narrative follows two men journeying across New England during World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their paths first cross in a piano club in 1916. That summer, Lionel and David, two music students, set out to record the folk songs and oral histories of northern U.S. communities &#8211; a cradle of folk music brought over by English settlers.
