Others are even more effusive: the man known as \u201c<strong>The Dare<\/strong>\u201d is breathing new life into late-2000s New York rock. It\u2019s as if he could turn any small gathering into a hyper-hip Manhattan party\u2026<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"1001\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"1001\">At 29, the Los Angeles native, with his minimalist aesthetic, has gone all in on the timeless black suit-and-tie look, irreverent lyrics, a few sharp-tongued interview quotes, and the angelic face of a new model darling among fashion magazines.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1405\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1405\">One year after releasing his debut four-track EP <em data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1064\">The Sex EP<\/em> (2023), The Dare is now promoting his first studio album: <em data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1151\">What\u2019s Wrong with New York<\/em>. In twenty-seven minutes of electroclash and dance-punk \u00e0 la <strong>LCD Soundsystem<\/strong> or <strong>Fischerspooner<\/strong>, he delivers new wave and synthpop surges that once electrified the arty circles of the Big Apple. As a good golden boy, he\u2019s already winning over the masses.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1735\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But once the glossy surface starts to crack, what\u2019s left? Not much, unfortunately. The provocations that everyone\u2019s chasing come off like blank-firing bullets. His cool is entirely manufactured, and his album\u2014designed as a pastiche of the best of fifteen years ago\u2014feels as explosive as it is repetitive. As effective as a placebo.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oEMy1cPYbQ4<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>You&#8217;re Invited<\/em> (2024) by The Dare.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The meteoric rise of indie sleaze\u2019s new icon<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"2327\">After a brief stint as \u201c<em>Turtlenecked<\/em>\u201d\u2014described by Discogs in 2015 as <em>\u201cindie rock with zigzag structure and whimsical lyricism\u201d<\/em>\u2014Harrison Smith ended up behind the decks at <strong>Hedi Slimane<\/strong>\u2019s private parties. He soon signed every page of a contract with Republic Records, the influential label home to Drake, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, and Ariana Grande. Fueled by tracks like <em data-start=\"2173\" data-end=\"2180\">Girls<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2196\">Good Time<\/em>, his prophetic 2023 EP featured a suggestive cover: two anonymous couples simulating sex\u2026 fully clothed. Obscenity has its limits.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2766\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2766\">With abrasive electro-pop that could scandalize aristocrats or land on the FIFA soundtrack, The Dare has become the nostalgic reincarnation of indie sleaze\u2014a party ethos from the 2010s whose icons include Hedi Slimane, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/mode\/fashion-week\/kate-moss-aron-piper-pharell-williams-celebrities-at-the-dior-mens-show-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kate Moss<\/strong><\/a>, and <strong>Pete Doherty<\/strong>. Without realizing it, he\u2019s revived an era we thought long gone, when emaciated models would rally the crowd from the DJ booth at the trendiest club of the moment\u2014and we thought it was chic.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2987\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2987\">To his credit, Harrison Smith is upfront about his influences: \u201c<em>Electroclash and dance-punk represent a lot of my ideals in music. [\u2026] Girls who fuck on the train. Girls who got so much hair on they ass, it clogs the drain\u2026<\/em>\u201d He also rode the wave of the brat summer aesthetic\u2014popularized by<a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/beyonce-charli-xcx-sza-the-unmissable-concerts-and-festivals-of-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>Charli XCX<\/strong><\/a>\u2014by producing <em data-start=\"3416\" data-end=\"3423\">Guess<\/em>, her track featuring none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/beauty\/what-does-billie-eilishs-fragrance-look-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Billie Eilish<\/strong>.<\/a> He even makes a brief appearance in the <strong>Aidan Zamiri<\/strong>-directed music video, released late last summer.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3579\" data-end=\"3980\"><\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3577\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3579\" data-end=\"3980\">Ultimately, The Dare\u2019s hyper-cinematic and unmistakably cool music isn\u2019t exactly erotic. His records play like d\u00e9j\u00e0-vu tracks, as with <em data-start=\"3714\" data-end=\"3723\">Perfume<\/em> and <em data-start=\"3728\" data-end=\"3738\">Movement<\/em> from his debut album\u2014a formula of catchy hooks underpinned by oozing basslines. The influence of LCD Soundsystem is palpable in these fiery anthems, though here, they\u2019re crafted solely to feed the fervor of New York\u2019s underground club scene.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3982\" data-end=\"4208\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3982\" data-end=\"4208\"><em>\u201cWhat I do isn\u2019t that complicated,<\/em>\u201d he admits. <em>\u201cIt\u2019s all about energy. It\u2019s about giving people permission to have a good time.\u201d<\/em> Familiar as they may sound, The Dare\u2019s tracks shun experimentation in favor of what simply works.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4319\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4319\"><em>What\u2019s Wrong With New York?
