But she had to get out eventually to see the body lying in the middle of the road\u2026 Uncle Fred is dead. His eyes are open, and his shirt a little crumpled. And Shula is alone on the road, trapped in a puffy, grotesque costume. <br><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1068\" data-end=\"1390\">She hesitated before getting out, because stepping out meant awakening terrifying memories. Memories of monstrous men who ravage the bodies and minds of Zambia\u2019s middle-class daughters. To be clear: this new feature by Zambian filmmaker <strong>Rungano Nyoni<\/strong> deals with rape. This time, fiction comes close to documentary.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1644\">Shown at the <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/cannes-2024-the-most-quirky-moments-of-the-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>2024 Cannes Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, <em data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"1459\">On Becoming a Guinea Fowl<\/em> touches on grief, tribute, silence, doubt, remorse, secrecy, warning, family, women&#8217;s anguish, and the devastation wrought by the dead\u2026 Sometimes the filth only emerges in the shrouds.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Am Not A Witch - Official Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-cookieconsent=\"statistics, marketing\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z6U0T3DAyro?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><div class=\"cookieconsent-optout-statistics cookieconsent-optout-marketing\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/figure><br>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A bleak, disillusioned feminism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1688\" data-end=\"2142\">We must remember the name Rungano Nyoni. Born in Zambia, the filmmaker emigrated to Wales at the age of nine. She began experimenting with short films early on and, in 2015, won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival. With Iranian-Finnish screenwriter <strong>Hamy Ramezan<\/strong>, she painted a 13-minute portrait of domestic violence. <em data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2018\">Kuuntele<\/em> (<em data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2028\">Listen<\/em>), nominated for an Oscar and shown at the Directors\u2019 Fortnight, unfolds almost entirely in an interrogation room.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2622\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2622\">Nyoni\u2019s feminism already appeared radical, bleak, and disillusioned. Her first feature ultimately paved the way for<strong> <em data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2287\">On Becoming a Guinea Fowl<\/em><\/strong>. In 2017, she released <em data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2329\">I Am Not A Witch<\/em>, a mischievous satire inspired by Alphonse Daudet\u2019s <em data-start=\"2382\" data-end=\"2401\">Mr. Seguin\u2019s Goat<\/em>. By focusing on a nine-year-old girl accused of witchcraft by her village, Nyoni skewered and denounced the absurd beliefs of a sick society. A wildlife documentary teaches us that helmeted guinea fowl form noisy communities. They\u2019ve developed an alarm system to escape predators and warn nearby animals of approaching danger. Maybe Shula should never have left her second-hand car. The creatures are many, and never far away. And even after they die, their prey still bear the scars of past assaults.<\/p><br\/><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3109\" data-end=\"3438\"><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3109\" data-end=\"3438\">Presented at <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/cannes-2024-the-most-quirky-moments-of-the-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>2024 Cannes Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, in the Un Certain Regard section, <em data-start=\"3163\" data-end=\"3190\">On Becoming a Guinea Fowl<\/em> remains a necessary film\u2014even if it sometimes lacks rhythm and, despite being backed by A24, feels fairly conventional. After an outstanding opening, the film ultimately stays quite academic but manages to depict grief with both horror and poetry.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3817\">At the close of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the jury\u2014chaired by actor and director<a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/why-xavier-dolan-might-end-his-career-soon-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>Xavier Dolan<\/strong><\/a> and including<strong> Ma\u00efmouna Doucour\u00e9<\/strong>, Moroccan screenwriter and producer <strong>Asmae El Moudir<\/strong>, actress <strong>Vicky Krieps<\/strong>, and American film critic <strong>Todd McCarthy<\/strong>\u2014awarded the Prize for Best Directing to Rungano Nyoni for <em data-start=\"3743\" data-end=\"3770\">On Becoming a Guinea Fowl<\/em>, tied with R<strong>oberto Minervini<\/strong> for <em data-start=\"3804\" data-end=\"3816\">The Damned.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3980\"><em>On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, winner of the Best Directing Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
