After Christopher Nolan\u2019s&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/why-oppenheimer-will-be-one-of-the-box-office-bombs-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oppenheimer<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>in 2024,&nbsp;<em>The Brutalist<\/em>, the third feature film by American director <strong>Brady Corbet<\/strong> (<em>The Childhood of a Leader<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Vox Lux<\/em>), is now the bookies\u2019 favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the <strong>Venice International Film Festival in 2024<\/strong>, and the awards for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director and Best Actor for <strong>Adrien Brody<\/strong> at the <strong>82nd Golden Globes<\/strong> on January 5th, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Featuring an exceptional cast, including <strong>Felicity Jones<\/strong>, <strong>Guy Pearce<\/strong> and <strong>Adrien Brody<\/strong>, who eventually replaced Joel Edgerton, the film focuses on L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Toth, a visionary Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor. Focus Features. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brady Corbet\u2019s masterpiece starring Adrien Brody left a mark at the Oscars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long, pretentious and inconsistent for some, a masterful period drama with exceptional direction and lead actor for others,\u00a0<em>The Brutalist\u00a0<\/em>left no one indifferent. Although the film features very explicit sex scenes, everyone will first and foremost remember the performances of its two protagonists, embodied by <strong>Adrien Brody<\/strong> and Felicity Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the screening at the <strong>Venice Film Festival<\/strong>, the film received a twelve-minute standing ovation&#8230; As it has imposed itself at the Golden Globes, alongside Coralie Fargeat\u2019s&nbsp;<em><strong>The Substance<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>and Jacques Audiard\u2019s&nbsp;<em><strong>Emilia Perez<\/strong><\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Brutalist&nbsp;<\/em>remains one of the big favourites for the Oscars today, one that could gather nearly a dozen nominations&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Final cut tiebreak goes to the director,&#8221; <\/em><strong>Brady Corbet<\/strong> said during his acceptance speech at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes, before adding: \u201c<em>It\u2019s sort of a controversial statement that shouldn\u2019t be controversial at all. I was told that this film was undistributable, that no one would come out and see it, that it wouldn\u2019t work. I don\u2019t resent that, but I want to use that as an opportunity to lift up filmmakers, not just my fellow nominees, but all the extraordinary directors in this room. Films don\u2019t exist without filmmakers. Please, let\u2019s support them, let\u2019s<\/em> <em>prop them up. Focus Features. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The divisive question of the use of artificial intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news set social media on fire, without anyone really knowing whether it was an issue or not&#8230; In the columns of&nbsp;<em>Red Shark News<\/em>, a digital magazine specialising in video production techniques, <strong>D\u00e1vid Jancs\u00f3<\/strong>, the film\u2019s editor and collaborator of Dev Patel on the film&nbsp;<em>Monkey Man<\/em>, pointed out that the team used artificial intelligence on several occasions for&nbsp;<em>The Brutalist<\/em>, in particular to perfect the accents of the actors. \u201c<em>We were very careful about preserving the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity\u2019s performances. It\u2019s mainly just replacing letters here and there<\/em>,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people got carried away online. Can actors whose work has been transformed using this tool in post-production, be celebrated in the same way as those who haven\u2019t used AI? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/who-is-bill-skarsgard-the-new-face-of-horror-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a><\/strong> comes to mind in this case, with his striking performance in Robert Eggers\u2019\u00a0<em>Nosferatu<\/em>, in which he speaks in Dacian, a dead language spoken in medieval Romania. \u201c<em>We should be having a very open conversation about it<\/em>.\u00a0<em>There\u2019s nothing in the film using AI that hasn\u2019t been done before.
