She was 20 and\u00a0had fire in her eyes. It\u00a0wouldn\u2019t be\u00a0until three years later that she finally\u00a0won the statuette, in David O.\u00a0Russell\u2019s Happiness Therapy, a deep\u00a0and stylish romantic comedy in\u00a0which she starred opposite Bradley\u00a0Cooper. But already, in this luxury\u00a0London hotel overrun by a horde of\u00a0ordinarily blas\u00e9 journalists, you could\u00a0feel a sort of tension in the air, as if\u00a0those present had the vague feeling\u00a0that they were meeting something\u00a0other than just the sensation of the\u00a0year, in actual fact an actress who\u00a0was destined for a career that would\u00a0be quite out of the ordinary. She was\u00a0funny, intelligent, moving, a little bit\u00a0reserved, but sure of her worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eight years later, <strong>Lawrence<\/strong> has\u00a0more than fulfilled those expectations. With four Oscar nominations to her credit, she has become the youngest woman to be nominated that many times in the best actress category. For several years now, she has been the most highly paid actress in Hollywood, according to Forbes magazine, and her films have made over $5 billion worldwide. That\u2019s what\u2019s called mastering your domain and ruling supreme. Something that no actress has managed for such a protracted period since <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/how-julia-roberts-became-one-of-hollywoods-most-beloved-stars\/\"><strong>Julia Roberts<\/strong><\/a>. <span class=\"fs-add-2\">She imposed\u00a0her own tempo on each film by effortlessly\u00a0promulgating her way of\u00a0being, striking home every time with\u00a0her intensity and her ability to play\u00a0youth enlivened with just a dash of\u00a0ageless wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like the star of <strong><em>Pretty Woman<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Lawrence<\/strong> has something of that all-American magic found in girls who hail from neither the city nor the coasts, but who grew up in the sunshine of the prairies. Lawrence was born in Kentucky, land of bluegrass and cheerleaders \u2013 and, indeed, she was a member of a cheerleading squad in high school. While she had never set out to deny her origins on the border of the Midwest and the Deep South, she knew early on, for ambition\u2019s sake, that she\u2019d have to leave her homeland pretty quickly. And at just 14, while on holiday in New York, she was spotted in the street by a talent scout who set her up with potential agents. So began a period in which Lawrence did everything to maximize her chances, to the point of giving up on regular schooling. She also adamantly refused to work as a model. So what was it that drove her? A desire, she has explained in interviews, to reconnect with childhood sensations. She recalls that when she was a kid, acting in front of her family or in school plays was a way of banishing anxiety and getting back her self-confidence. And it\u2019s perhaps that which makes her so engaging today \u2013 this unchanging joy in acting, her simple and natural way of transforming every set she finds herself on into a place of freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"rtecenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"fs-add-2\"><em>&#8220;There are several women I consider\u00a0role models. Professionally,\u00a0I was lucky enough to work with\u00a0Jodie Foster when I was about 18.\u00a0She gave me valuable advice on life\u00a0as well as my career. She\u2019s smart\u00a0and solid with her feet on the ground.\u00a0Jodie was a real role model for me.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The challenge was not easy<strong>.<\/strong> Early on, <strong>Lawrence<\/strong> began, with the suppleness of a cat, to alternate between indie productions and blockbusters until she was capable of just about anything. All without disorienting her fans \u2013 a rare talent. In 2011, Matthew Vaughn\u2019s <strong><em>X-Men: First Class<\/em> <\/strong>made\u00a0her a global star in the role of\u00a0Mystique, a mutant who can change\u00a0form and appearance \u2013 the perfect\u00a0metaphor for an actress. The <em><strong>Hunger\u00a0Games<\/strong><\/em> tetralogy, in which she\u00a0played Katniss Everdeen, a rebellious\u00a0teenager, proved she was capable of the leading-lady role in a\u00a0movie franchise whose financial\u00a0stakes were colossal. These films\u00a0also charted<strong> Lawrence<\/strong>\u2019s progress towards the summits, showing a young woman who was ever more sure of herself and of her choices. But at the same time, one could find her being directed by Jodie Foster in <strong><em>The Beaver<\/em><\/strong>, starring in one of the only contemporary romantic comedies that can truly be taken seriously, like <strong><em>Happiness Therapy<\/em><\/strong>, and playing the heroine in a black-comedy crime movie set in the 70s which became an immediate classic, <strong><em>American<\/em><\/strong> <em><strong>Hustle<\/strong><\/em>. On each occasion, Lawrence was herself. In the\u00a0short directed by Francis Lawrence\u00a0(no relation) to accompany the global\u00a0release of Dior\u2019s perfume Joy \u2013 of\u00a0which Jennifer is the face \u2013 she radiates, in just a few leg movements in\u00a0a Beverly Hills pool, an aura of eternal\u00a0Hollywood glamour; she\u2019s a\u00a0woman of 2018 who could have\u00a0been a star in just about any era, an\u00a0incarnation of the contemporary who\u00a0is never hindered by the present.\u00a0<em>\u201cFrancis and I have been working\u00a0together for many years, notably on\u00a0Hunger Games and Red Sparrow.\u00a0Because he knows me very well, he\u00a0was able to incorporate several aspects\u00a0of my personality into the film.\u00a0We tried more to catch emotions\u00a0than to tell a linear story. It was as fun as it was exciting to work together\u00a0in this way, in what was an\u00a0entirely new approach for us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span class=\"fs-add-2\"><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m devoting time to RepresentUs, which I\u2019ve joined, and whose goal is to encourage people to get involved in politics. RepresentUs is the biggest anti-corruption campaign in the U.S.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, <strong>Lawrence<\/strong> has changed, and not only because life has made her the most desirable actress of her times.\u00a0Eager to rest, she has taken more\u00a0time to reflect on her commitments,\u00a0one of which is feminism, a nobrainer\u00a0in the context of #TimesUp,\u00a0which she publicly supported in early\u00a02018. <em>\u201cI see myself as a strong\u00a0woman who holds the reins of her\u00a0life. There are several women I consider\u00a0role models. Professionally,\u00a0I was lucky enough to work with\u00a0Jodie Foster when I was about 18.\u00a0She gave me valuable advice on life\u00a0as well as my career. She\u2019s smart\u00a0and solid with her feet on the ground.\u00a0Jodie was a real role model for me.\u00a0And of course there were my friends,\u00a0my mother and my family.\u201d<\/em> <strong>Lawrence<\/strong> likes simple life (\u201cWhat makes me happy? My dog Pippi, my friends and reading\u201d), but there is a constant openness in her to passion; her favourite book, she says, is Tolstoy\u2019s tragic novel Anna Karenina, certain chapters of which she\u2019s \u201c<em>read again and again\u2026<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s election\u00a0as president of the USA, <strong>Lawrence<\/strong>\u00a0has developed a taste for urgent political\u00a0activism via a bipartisan organization\u00a0which is fighting for an overhaul\u00a0of American democracy: <em>\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0devoting time to RepresentUs, which\u00a0I\u2019ve joined, and whose goal is to encourage\u00a0people to get involved in\u00a0politics. RepresentUs is the biggest\u00a0anticorruption campaign in the U.S.\u00a0acting at a local level, and it unites\u00a0conservatives, progressives and all\u00a0those in between. Our goal is to repair\u00a0the American political system\u00a0which today is broken by corruption.\u00a0We circumvent Congress by getting\u00a0anticorruption laws passed at state\u00a0and city level. These laws protect our\u00a0communities and help create a dynamic\u00a0for future national reform.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0So, before the release of the\u00a0next episode of X-Men, in February\u00a02019, Lawrence clearly has her work\u00a0cut out in realms beyond those of the\u00a0sound stage and the studio.
