The Chanel Fall-Winter 2021-2022 show is inspired by skiing and partying
Fusing winter sports-inspired wardrobes with party girl silhouettes, Virginie Viard offers a hybrid collection that evokes the style of model Stella Tennant, a close friend of the house who died this January.
Filmed by Inez & Vinoodh at Castel – a veritable nightlife institution in Saint-Germain-des-Prés – Chanel’s fall-winter 2021-2022 collection crosses Parisian style with winter sportswear, playing on the contrast between sensuality and protection. The collection’s nonchalance recalls the unequalled elegance of top model Stella Tennant, a close friend of the house who died in January. “Today, certain silhouettes remind me of [her] allure, the way she wore certain pieces was so Chanel,” confided Virginie Viard, the house’s artistic director.
Thus thick tweed coats with a herringbone pattern warm ultra-short silhouettes or midi skirts and crop-tops, while tweed suits and little evening dresses are coupled with moon boots in faux fur – a material also found on the house’s emblematic jackets and coats. Ski suit-like salopettes in white quilted fabric embroidered with red and blue motifs, or in fuchsia tweed, replace classic trousers, a tweed kilt replaces a skirt, and colourful jumpers are worn instead of suit jackets. Lace is glimpsed beneath a coat and silk stockings through the slit of a skirt. “This collection is a mix of two influences: the winter sports atmosphere, which I love, and a certain idea of Parisian cool chic, from the seventies to today. I love Castel for its many salons, the spiral staircase, its bar, the path this venue offers, its little house aspect where the models can change, dress and undress, put on make-up together, have fun like a girls’ night in. It’s very sensual,” concludes Virginie Viard.
