After Seville, Lecce, and Marrakech, the Dior Fall 2023 show was held in Mumbai, India, and celebrated the know-how of Chanakya embroidery and of the Chanakya School of Craft.
As the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre is about to open its doors in Mumbai – a multi-disciplinary artistic space including a museum dedicated to fashion, where Dior creations will soon be exhibited – Maria Grazia Chiuri has opted for the Indian megalopolis to host her Dior Fall 2023 show. Celebrating the business and friendly ties that has bounded her to India and to Karishma Swali over the years – the latter runs the Chanakya embroidery workshops and the Chanakya School of Craft in Mumbai – this collection stands as a creative dialogue perpetuating the precious and exceptional skills uniting France and India.
Drawing her inspiration from the Dior archival creations designed by Marc Bohan following his trip to Mumbai and Delhi in April 1962, Maria Grazia Chiuri has chosen a range of colors and fabrics that exalts the common influences she shares with Karishma Swali. In addition to timeless silhouettes that have now become ideal blank canvases on which the embroidery work stand out, a sequence of the show has been dedicated to silks – green, yellow, pink, and purple ones. As a tribute to Marc Bohan, those silks take shape in a collection of sophisticated evening coats, straight skirts inspired by saris and traditional Indian cuts, trousers, small boleros, jackets, and bras. A true sartorial genealogy defined by the various fashion heritages and cultures.
Alongside the muses and friends of the fashion house, like Camille Cottin, Juliette Armanet, Charithra Chandran, and Laetitia Casta, Dior also invited renowned Indian actresses, such as Freida Pinto, Sonam Kapoor, and model Indrani Dasgupta.
