One year after his Oscar win, Wes Anderson’s new film takes shape

Since the release of The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2013, American director Wes Anderson has continued to leave his mark on the international film scene. He has carved out a niche for himself with poetic, whimsical feature films distinguished by their vintage aesthetic.

However, it wasn’t until recently that the Texan filmmaker was honored with a statuette from the prestigious Academy Awards, thanks to his short film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2024).

Just a few months after this first Oscar triumph, the prolific filmmaker’s next project is becoming clearer. Wes Anderson’s new film, The Phoenician Scheme, is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2025.

Scarlett Johansson, Benicio del Toro… an all-star cast for The Phoenician Scheme

According to Variety, the film’s plot revolves around a father-daughter relationship—an exploration of the inner workings of a family-run business set against the backdrop of an espionage thriller.

Wes Anderson is known for assembling stellar casts in nearly all his films. Following in the footsteps of Timothée Chalamet and Léa Seydoux, the director once again surrounds himself with top-tier talent.

A Cannes 2025 premiere and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the credits?

The Phoenician Scheme stars Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, and Bill Murray. But it’s Benicio del Toro who takes on the lead role, playing a wealthy magnate. Mia Threapleton—known from the historical drama The Buccaneers—portrays Sister Liesl, del Toro’s daughter, who is also a nun.

Michael Cera (Molly’s Game, 2017), the ever-compelling Benedict Cumberbatch, and Rupert Friend round out the impressive ensemble. Two years after Asteroid City premiered on the Croisette in 2023, The Phoenician Scheme could very well make its world debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival… or so we hope.
