What is Manfred Thierry Mugler’s new project?

On December 7th and 8th, the sublime Coliseum Theatre in London is hosting three exceptional ballets: the main act is “McGregor + Mugler” – by the English choreographer Wayne McGregor with costumes designed by Manfred Thierry Mugler – preceded by “Radio and Juliet” by Edward Clug – with music composed by the legendary group Radiohead – and “Faun”, the remake of a piece by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created in 2009.

While the name Thierry Mugler has been known globally in fashion since the 1980s, most people are unaware of what's become of the man behind the house that bears his name. Known these days as Manfred Thierry Mugler, he has completely changed appearance and is now a music hall director. This year his return to the stage is happening through the medium of dance: the former fashion designer has been entrusted with making the costumes and art directing the ballet McGregor + Mugler, choreographed by the enormously talented Wayne McGregor – who recently appeared at the Opéra de Paris with his piece Tree of Codes, performed last summer.

On at the Coliseum Theatre in London, the ballet by Wayne McGregor and Manfred Thierry Mugler is part of a triple bill with two other equally extraordinary pieces: starting with Radio and Juliet, a new version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette (1595) as a contemporary ballet – by Romanian choreographer Edward Clug complete with a soundtrack that cleverly mixes rock and electronic music composed by the English band Radiohead. Viewers will then watch Faun, a remake of the 2009 piece by the Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui – performed by two of the Principal dancers from the legendary Bolshoi ballet – that revisits Nijinsky’s classic L’après Midi d’un Faune (1912). Its costumes have been created by none other than the British designer Hussein Chalayan.

The three ballets will be performed on December 7th and 8th at the Coliseum Theatre, London. Tickets for these three ballets are already on sale on the theatre’s website.
