A Tomb Raider series produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

After Carrie by Stephen King, it’s Lara Croft’s turn to be adapted in a Prime Video’s series. The well-known archeologist travelled around the world in compelling stories, retold for the Tomb Raider series. Actress, producer and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) is at the head of the project, for now without a release date.

The actress, outstanding in the show Fleabag, was awarded an Emmy Awards. She hasn’t hidden her excitement to get into this project. After starring in the last Indiana Jones movie (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) in 2023, Phoebe Waller-Bridge turned movie director revives one of the most iconic pop-culture archeologists.

After Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who will be the next Lara Croft?

One of the most renowned portrayals of Lara Croft was Angelina Jolie’s, who took on the character for two action movies. Unfortunately, the series struggled with handling the oversexualisation of the character (judged as a too-polished depiction of femininity according to the reviews). But in 2018, a new adaptation saw the light of day. With Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander in the title role, Tomb Raider by Roar Uthaug wanted a new beginning for the character. However, the movie hasn’t met the expected success – despite the revision of the personality and wardrobe of its main character.

As for now, the character’s fate falls under the hands of Phoebe Waller-Bridge. In 2024, the public expects a fully-fleshed out depiction of the character, far from the sexist stereotypes that stained Lara Croft in last portrayals.

Emma Corrin and Lucy Boynton: Main picks to be Lara Croft

For several weeks, the upcoming show’s casting was – for many actresses applying – a battle field. Though succeeding Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander is no easy task, Sophie Turner got the part. Last November, several American media, including Variety and Deadline, covered the rumor that it may be Sophie Turner who landed the role.

The actress, well-known for rendering Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, is a wise choice. Other main picks were heard about, such as the actress Lucy Boynton, starring in Bohemian Rhapsody and The Pale Blue Eye alongside Christian Bale. She stands as a riskier choice as her public image is considerably different from Lara Croft’s.

Among other names listed on Deadline, we found Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine, The Crown) as well as Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil). At first glance, the studio seems to be searching for a British actress to fit the character’s background.

Sophie Turner is confirmed as Lara Croft

We learn, on September 4th 2025, that it’s Sophie Turner who will be the face of the upcoming Tomb Raider series. In a press release, Phoebe Waller-Bridge states : “I’m honored to announce that the talented Sophie Turner will portray Lara beside this phenomenal creative team. She continues : It’s not everyday that the occasion to direct a high-stakes show with a character we love happens”. Filming is scheduled to begin at the start of January 2026.

In the last few years, many video game adaptations have seen the light of day. Shows beating audience records, such as The Last of Us on HBO and Fallout on Prime Video. What will be of this new version of Tomb Raider
