Intensive twerking in a private jet, orgies in the woods, sensual rodeo… The music videos of the year 2022 are overflowing with erotic images, whether it is in R’n’B, rock, or pop songs. From Rosalía to Dua Lipa, here is a roundup of this year’s smoothest videos.
1. Despechá (2022) by Rosalía
A few months after the release of her highly acclaimed album Motomami last March, Catalan superstar Rosalía has taken the time, while being on tour, to unveil Despechá, an unreleased track that sounds like a new summer hit. Directed by Mitch Ryan, with whom she has already collaborated for her track Delirio de grandeza, this new music video pictures the singer enjoying her day at the beach as the heat subsides and as people start playing cards and swimming wildly…
2. “No Hay Ley” (2022) de Kali Uchis
Colombian American singer, musician, and songwriter Kali Uchis surprised everyone with her new single, No Hay Ley, released on September 2nd. Used to R’n’B and pop melodies, the collaborator of Tyler, The Creator, Jorja Smith, SZA, and Tame Impala, unveiled a sensual track with house influences, following in the footsteps of Drake’s and Beyoncé’s latest albums. To match that hedonistic hit, a music video showing the 28-year-old star strolling through Paris, wearing Ottolinger and Ludovic de Saint Sernin, was directed by the New York creative duo Torso Solutions and confirmed the addictive potential of that new sonic journey.
3. “Killer” (2022) de FKA twigs
Lana Del Rey, Yelle, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Drake, or Rihanna… The music videos directed by Yoann Lemoine, aka Woodkid, are always as neat as his own music. This time, the Frenchman’s camera has beautifully captured FKA Twigs. “I wanted to portray her in a raw and intimate way, like we’ve never seen her before,” the director explained. In the video created for the single Killer by the author of the mixtape Caprisongs, Yoann Lemoine stages the torrid romance between the British singer and the German-Spanish actor Arón Piper, the protagonist of the Netflix show Elite.
4. “I Like You (A Happier Song)” (2022) by Post Malone featuring Doja Cat
American rapper and singer Post Malone has invited Californian R’n’B star Doja Cat to sing on his single I Like You (A Happier Song). But he did not limit his invite to the song only. In the bucolic video that goes with the track, the Say So singer runs bare- chested through the fields and poses, merely covered in flowers, for the artist who acts as an amateur painter.
5. “Plan B” (2022) by Megan Thee Stallion
First performed at the California music festival Coachella last April, Megan Thee Stallion’s nineties-inspired song Plan B was released with a special video. Mugler’s artistic director Casey Cadwallader and American artist John Miserendino directed it. As the images filmed on a black background go by, the rapper switches between different revealing bodysuits designed by Mugler, before ending up completely naked wearing only a hat created by milliner Stephen Jones.
6. “Jump” (2022) by Ciara featuring Coast Contra
With great hits like Get Up, Promise, Level Up and Like a Boy, as well as prestigious collaborations (Missy Elliott, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake), the sculptural Ciara has been one of the leading R’n’B singers of the 2000s. But since the released of her single Rooted in 2020, she has been flying under the radar. Her excellent last album Beauty Marks came out in 2019. This year surely marks the comeback of the 37-year-old singer, with her eighth opus on the way and a new label with which she has recently signed a contract. The former model and partner of 50 Cent and Future has also released Jump in 2022, an ultra-effective hip-hop and R’n’B track featuring the L.A. rap band Coast Contra.
7. “No Love” (2022) by Summer Walker, SZA & Cardi B
While her fans are eagerly awaiting her upcoming album, rapper Cardi B has joined singer SZA this year on the extended version of the American rapper Summer Walker’ hit No Love. Featured on Summer Walker’s latest album Still Over it (2021), this languorous retelling of the R’n’B banger released on March 25th brings the three women together around the everlasting love trope in a sensual and smooth video. Directed by Lacey Duke, with whom Summer Walker previously worked on the video of Girls Need Love (2018), this new video turns out to be as sexy as the song itself.
8. “Hentai” (2022) by Rosalía
A motorbike ride, a wild camping session, a night out at a karaoke bar, a frenzied twerking contest… Every video made by the brilliant Spanish singer Rosalía is an invigorating, and often powerfully, erotic experience. In the video for Hentai, appearing on her latest avant-gardist and eclectic album Motomami, the artist embarks on a memorable rodeo session on a mechanical bull. She then moves with lust on an unmade bed placed in the middle of an arena, while a horse trots alongside her. A fantastic, sensual, and bewitching ride.
9. “DA” (2022) by Shay
For the past few years, Shay has left music aside to focus on fashion, making a move with the house of Burberry. Her brother, producer Le Motif, had even hinted on his social networks that his sister was about to stop rapping. Yet Vanessa Lesnicki, aka Shay, suggested that she was about to make her comeback on the music scene last April. The former protégé of Booba posted an enigmatic video on her Instagram profile on April 13th. After deleting all her posts, she shared an enigmatic and futuristic teaser on her feed. The singer, whose enchanting second album Antidote dates back to 2019, revealed a video in which she was lying down in a laboratory where scientists were reprogramming her like a cyborg.
10. “Sweetest Pie” (2022) by Megan Thee Stallion & Dua Lipa
This is a top-level meeting. British singer Dua Lipa and American rapper Megan Thee Stallion have joined forces on Sweetest Pie last March. Directed by Dave Meyers, who has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry – Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes –, the ambitious music video is a dive into a fantastic and disturbing forest. The images evoke the tale of Hansel and Gretel and the adventures of Indiana Jones.
11. “No Más” (2022) by Murda Beatz featuring Quavo, J Balvin, Anitta & Pharrell
Even if she only makes an appearance on screen for a few minutes, singer Anitta has the ability to set any video project on fire. Released this year, the video for the track No Más by Canadian rap producer Murda Beatz is concrete proof. It takes us to a sexy party in Miami, where one can witness the Brazilian superstar’s wiggling skills. The track is a good bet in the summer hit 2022 race. No Más brings together some of today’s hottest artists on a swaying and effective hip-hop melody, since it has been co-produced by Pharrell Williams, and since Quavo from Migos, J Balvin, and Anitta have provided the singing and rapping parts.
12. “Tomorrow” (2022) by GloRilla
With a few tracks and (daring) videos only, Memphis-based American rapper GloRilla has become one of the go-to figures in American hip-hop. Her presence and swagger remind us of Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, with whom she has previously collaborated. In the video for Tomorrow, which piles up over 12 million views, she twerks in a private jet along with her friends, holding wads of cash between their manicured nails. The artist’s boundless energy and charisma suggest that GloRilla is likely to make a splash in the coming months.
13. “Thérèse” (2022) by Maya Hawke
When your parents are Hollywood stars Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, chances are you have a certain talent for capturing the light. The charismatic Maya Hawke is following in her illustrious family’s footsteps with a promising acting career (Stranger Things, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood). But she is also making her own way as a folk-rock singer in the indie art scene. After her acclaimed debut album Blush released in 2020, she unveiled one single from her second album Moss, released on September 23rd. The video of the melancholic single Thérèse, inspired by the 1938 painting Thérèse rêvant by Balthus, is already causing a ruckus. Directed by actor and director Brady Corbet (Vox Lux), the music video shows the 24- year-old American with a group of friends engaging in an orgy in the middle of the woods at night. Both erotic and disturbing, this short film drew its inspirations from Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki’s voyeuristic shots.
