What does season 3 of The White Lotus have in store for us?
A terrified young man suddenly stops his introduction to meditation class. Gunshots have just rang out in the distance inside the luxury White Lotus hotel in Thailand. He must flee as quickly as possible as the shots are getting closer.
After tumultuous holidays in Sicily and Hawaii, the satirical series created by Mike White in 2021 is back on with a third season in Thailand. The American screenwriter expands his exploration of the tensions between the ultra-rich and the staff of luxury hotels, while delivering a sharp criticism of the privileges of high society.
The cast of this new season includes Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), Walton Goggins (The Shield, Fallout) and Natasha Rothwell, who reprises her role as Belinda Lindsey, the sweet therapist and spa director. Lisa, the singer and member of the famous K-pop group Blackpink, is also joining the cast. The international star is making her acting debut in The White Lotus, embodying a hotel employee who suffers from the persistent advances of one of her colleagues.
A new opening credits track that disappoints the internet?
After making its mark with its hypnotic, quirky soundtracks, The White Lotus is renewing its opening credits track for its third season. Gone are the haunting choruses by Chilean composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer that went with the previous opening credits. For this new Thai iteration, the musician based in Canada has obviously drawn his inspiration from traditional Thai music, mixing metallic percussion, wooden flutes and floating electronic layers.
Traditional Thai percussion enters the ring. Kong wong yai – metallic gongs – ching cymbals and taphon drums pound out a syncopated rhythm, reminiscent of the repetitive patterns of the piphat, a typical instrumental ensemble of that region.
Audiences and awards are confirming the success of the series
Since the release of the first season in 2021, this dark comedy has been a resounding success, becoming one of HBO Max’s flagship series.
The first season, filmed in Hawaii, won ten Emmy Awards, including Best Miniseries and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Jennifer Coolidge. Season two of the show, set in Sicily, maintained momentum by winning another five awards, thus consolidating the series’ reputation.
In terms of ratings, The White Lotus broke records on HBO Max, with a significant increase in viewers from one season to the next. The second season saw its finale more than double its audience compared to the first season, reaching almost 4.1 million viewers.
