  • Wicked: A fantasy film inspired by The Wizard of Oz

Since last winter 2024, pop star Ariana Grande and British actress Cynthia Erivo are headlining the film Wicked. This cinematic adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical embarks us into the enchanting world of Oz inspired by the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The first instalment, released last year, also starred Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and Jeff Goldblum in the heart of a magical school.

So what’s the plot of Wicked 1? Two witches, Glinda and Elphaba, develop a deep friendship despite being complete opposites. But they must confront their biases when a conspiracy threatens one of them…

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo embraces method dressing

Before audiences could dive into this magical first chapter, fans were already captivated by the curated looks worn by the cast during the promotional tour. During interviews, screenings, and red carpets, the cast repeatedly paid tribute to the Wicked universe through their clothes, which quickly went viral on social media.

Following in the footsteps of Jenna Ortega during the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) press tour, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have also adopted “Method dressing” – the art of embodying a character off set.

Both actresses have been spotted exclusively in outfits reflecting their character – pink for one, green for the other. Cynthia Erivo leans into darker tones and vibrant electric greens, right down to her nail polish, while Ariana Grande explores various shades of pink, often through fairytale gowns. One standout look is the light pink Giambattista Valli dress with voluminous hems, paired with pink Tiffany & Co. jewels, worn by the singer at the 2024 Oscars.

The Wicked adventure continues with a sequel

As a sequel to the first film, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo once again returned to their signature colours in 2025, ahead of the theatrical release of Wicked: For Good on November 19th. One wielding a wand and wearing a sparkling tiara, the other sporting a witch’s hat and broom.

The stars delivered even more enchanting looks for the film’s global premieres. Ariana Grande called on sought-after stylist Law Roach, while Cynthia Erivo reunited with her longtime collaborator Jason Bolden to create either matching or contrasting outfits.

For this second chapter, Ariana Grande notably wore designs by Gilbert Adrian, Rahul Mishra, Robert Wun, and Alexander McQueen. As for Cynthia Erivo, she was spotted wearing Prada, Vivienne Westwood, and Givenchy by Sarah Burton.

Charli xcx, Camila Cabello… The stars fall for Wickedcore

Many celebrities have embraced what might just become the Wickedcore trend. Among them is singer Camila Cabello, who appeared at the 2024 Imagemaker Awards in a pink spaghetti-strap dress, paired with a white faux-fur stole and glittery pink pointed heels. A clear nod to the iconic ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz. Model Heidi Klum, the undisputed queen of Halloween costumes, paid tribute to the character of Glinda, wearing a bubblegum pink strapless gown with a dramatic train at another public event.

While pink may be dominating fashion, green is trending too. Several cast members have already made it their colour of choice. Jeff Goldblum sported a green Prada suit, while Ethan Slater wore a green velvet Thom Browne jacket at the Los Angeles premiere. And in 2024, Charli xcx, the singer behind the Brat phenomenon, posted an Instagram edit of herself and Ariana Grande recreating the iconic Wicked musical poster pose. After Charli xcx’s signature Brat green, could the Wicked green be the next big thing?

Make-up, cocktails, dolls… The film’s creative marketing push

Could Wicked become a pop culture phenomenon in the manner of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which took over summer 2023? By capitalizing on its protagonists’ signature colours – pink and green – the studio has rolled out a wide array of merchandise aimed at kids (Lego sets, Mattel dolls, Funko Pops, Monopoly) and adults alike. Ariana Grande’s cosmetics brand, R.E.M. Beauty, has launched several capsule collections featuring products inspired by the film’s aesthetic – face masks, makeup kits, 12-shade palettes, lip stains…

The phenomenon goes well beyond makeup. Suitcases, backpacks, and clutches in Glinda and Elphaba’s colours have been designed by the label Béis in collaboration with Wicked. And perhaps the most unexpected of all, Absolut has unveiled a cocktail kit inspired by the film, allowing fans to mix up a Wicked-themed green martini…

    Wickedcore figurines

Taking the immersive experience to new heights, the franchise has recently partnered with Deliveroo. Until November 20th, 2025, the food delivery app is offering a complimentary bag filled with goodies for a fully Wickedcore movie night at home in limited edition. Inside, cinema tickets, a sleep mask, a pair of socks, a mug with matching coasters to sip a potion in style, as well as pink and green popcorn…

Also, to mark the release of the second film, jewellery house SwarovskiAriana Grande is an ambassador of the brand – has unveiled precision-cut crystal figurines of Elphaba and Glinda, along with a crystal ornament designed to adorn your Christmas tree. This past Halloween, Elphaba and Glinda costumes were spotted everywhere. In short, the enchanting world of Wicked: For Good takes us far beyond the movie theatre experience.
