The Housemaid, the adaptation of a gripping best-seller

Hollywood clearly has a taste for thrillers. After Disclaimer and Babygirl, another suspense-driven film adapted from the best-seller The Housemaid is set to keep audiences on edge. Presented as a book that cannot be put down easily, The Housemaid is a psychological thriller that takes us into the daily life of Millie, a housemaid for the Winchesters, a wealthy family living in New York.

For this young woman, freshly released from prison, the job feels like a second chance. Except that it quickly becomes clear that the Winchester family is hiding many secrets. And to make matters even more complicated, the housemaid falls in love with the husband…

Written by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid has become a social media phenomenon since its release in 2022. The book has gone viral on TikTok, with over 18 million posts mentioning it, been praised for its gripping plot and intense characters. Therefore, the film adaptation is very much anticipated by fans of the novel.

A prestigious cast starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried

The film’s marketing team leaned into the book’s success on TikTok to announce the cast. In fact, part of the casting was revealed in a video on the app in early October, generating even more buzz around the adaptation. The film will star Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) as Millie, while Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Jennifer’s Body) takes on the role of Nina Winchester, the picture-perfect matriarch.

In an interview with Numéro, Amanda Seyfried shared: “This is very different from the series Long Bright River, in which I’m currently acting. I really enjoy exploring different genres. The Housemaid is going to be an event. It’s a very specific storyline and we’re approaching it in a special way. We shot the film this year and we’re already starting to promote it, because it’s based on a very popular book that’s been beautifully adapted into a screenplay and brought to life on screen. I think that the novel’s wildest aspects truly come alive in the movie. That’s no secret, anyone who has read it knows what happens.”

The actress added: “We had a lot of fun on set and the monster in the movie is terrifying. I also loved working with Sydney… It was really rewarding. And Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), the director, has such a distinctive style. I’ve wanted to work with him for years and I was so happy it finally happened. I can’t wait for people to watch the film. It’s a real adventure. I think it’s going to be a smash!”

American filmmaker Paul Feig, best known for the brilliant Bridesmaids (2011), is behind the camera and directs the project. As for the male lead (Nina’s husband), many had suggested Henry Cavill’s name. In the end, the role went to actor Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us).

The Housemaid by Paul Feig, coming out in theatres on December 19th, 2025, in the US and on December 24th in France.
