The Housemaid, the hit film adaptation of a gripping bestseller

Hollywood’s love affair with film adaptations of literary works shows no sign of waning. Based on the bestselling novel The Housemaid, Paul Feig’s new film (Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor) is a nail-bitter and is proving to be just as successful as the book it’s based on.

Described as a gripping page-turner, The Housemaid is a psychological thriller that immerses us in the daily life of Millie, a housemaid working for the Winchesters, a wealthy family living in New York. For the young woman, freshly released from prison, the job feels like a second chance. Except that it quickly becomes clear that the Winchester family is hiding many secrets. And to make matters even more complicated, the housemaid flirts with the husband…

Written by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid has become a social media phenomenon since its release in 2022. The novel has gone viral on TikTok, with over 18 million posts mentioning it and praised for its gripping plot and intense characters.

Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried… A prestigious cast

The film bets on a high-profile cast. The male lead, Nina’s husband, is played by actor Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us), while actress Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) steps into the role of the housemaid. Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Jennifer’s Body) delivers a stellar performance as Nina Winchester, the all too perfect matriarch.

In an interview with Numéro, Amanda Seyfried shared: “This is very different from the series Long Bright River, in which I’m currently acting. I really enjoy exploring different genres. The Housemaid is going to be an event. It’s a very specific storyline and we’re approaching it in a special way. We shot the film this year and we’re already starting to promote it, because it’s based on a very popular book that’s been beautifully adapted into a screenplay and brought to life on screen. I think that the novel’s wildest aspects truly come alive in the movie. That’s no secret, anyone who has read it knows what happens.”

The actress also added: “We had a lot of fun on set and the monster in the movie is terrifying. I also loved working with Sydney… It was really rewarding. And Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), the director, has such a distinctive style. I’ve wanted to work with him for years and I was so happy it finally happened. I can’t wait for people to watch the film. It’s a real adventure. I think it’s going to be a smash!”

    A sequel already confirmed

Thanks to its cast, the buzz surrounding Freida McFadden’s book series, and its narrative filled with plot twists, The Housemaid is drawing large crowds to theaters. Since its release in December 2025, the film has grossed $133 million worldwide. Riding on this success, Lionsgate has announced that a sequel to the psychological thriller is in development. The premise? “Years later, Millie is hired by a new family living in a beautiful New York apartment. Once again, this household is hiding dark secrets…

The Housemaid will return to the big screen under the title The Housemaid’s Secrets.
