  • Cillian Murphy is back in the film adaptation of Peaky Blinders

Two years ago, Cillian Murphy played the “father of the atomic bomb” in Oppenheimer (2023), Christopher Nolan’s explosive feature. It won seven awards, including Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards. That deep, psychological role also earned the Irish actor the coveted Oscar for Best Actor last March. Now, he is set to return to a character he knows all too well.

For nearly a decade, the Irish actor brilliantly portrayed the charismatic and enigmatic gangster Thomas Shelby in the British series Peaky Blinders (2013-2022). After six widely acclaimed seasons, the creator of the show, Steven Knight, revealed to BirminghamWorld that the series will continue to live as a feature film. The adaptation will be directed by Tom Harper (Agent Stone).

Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan join the cast

And as good news rarely comes alone, the irresistible Cillian Murphy is officially part of the cast of The Immortal Man: A Peaky Blinders Film. Alongside him is the commanding presence of Rebecca Ferguson, known for her roles in the franchises Dune and Mission: Impossible. Irish actor Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) will also join the cast.

For now, very little is known about the return on screen of Birmingham’s most notorious gang, aside from a poster unveiled on Instagram by Netflix in December 2025. Scheduled for release on March 20th, 2026, the film could focus on the story of the Shelby family during the Second World War.

Two new seasons of the cult series

Clearly, the Peaky Blinders haven’t said their last word. Following the announcement of the film adaptation, Steven Knight confirmed that the series would go on for two additional seasons, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter last October 2025.

Commissioned by Netflix and the BBC, this sequel will take the form of a spin-off spanning two seasons, each consisting of six one-hour-long episodes. While Cillian Murphy won’t be reprising his iconic role as Thomas Shelby on screen this time, he will still be involved as executive producer of the project. New characters will be introduced in these new chapters.

House of Guinness, a Steven Knight series

A synopsis offers a clearer picture of what’s to come. The plot will unfold in Birmingham, ravaged by World War II. The premise? “After enduring heavy bombing during World War II, Birmingham is being rebuilt in concrete and steel. It’s a new era for Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, as the race to control the city’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal competition of mythical proportions. It’s a city of unprecedented opportunities and dangers, with the Shelby family at its bloodstained heart.”

Moreover, Steven Knight, the director of the show Peaky Blinders, is also behind a new Netflix series centered on the history of the Guinness family – the founders of the famous beer brand. Titled House of Guinness, the show unfortunately doesn’t live up to the legacy of his cult classic.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, directed by Tom Harper, will come out in theatres on March 20th, 2026. Peaky Blinders, seasons 7 and 8, by Steven Knight do not have a release date yet.
