Lee Miller: Kate Winslet’s next big role could win her an Oscar

Between a biopic on photographer Lee Miller, Avatar 3, the re-release of Titanic and the series The Regime, British actress Kate Winslet, 47, will be on all fronts, at the cinema and on platforms, in 2023 and 2024.

Kate Winslet, soon in Avatar 3 and The Regime

2024 and 2025 will be golden years for the British actress
Kate Winslet
aged 47. This busy schedule proves that there is life in the movies for actresses over 45. Buoyed by the success of
Avatar 2: The Way of the Water
(2022) and the excellent series
Mare of Easttown
(2021), the star is set to appear inAvatar 3, scheduled for December 17, 2025. But the romantic, feminist heroine of
Titanic
(recently re-released in cinemas) will play a chancellor in the HBO series
The Regime
to be released in 2024. The show is directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, and will tell the ruthless story of what goes on within the walls of a palace during the collapse of an authoritarian regime. It should have a tense atmosphere similar to that of The Crown and Succession. Guillaume Gallienne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough and Hugh Grant will also be taking part.

A Lee Miller biopic with Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard

But Kate Winslet’s most exciting project involves an icon of photography. The crazy, tragic life of American
Lee Miller
photographer, model, war correspondent and muse (and mistress) of
Man Ray
born in 1907 was well worth a biopic. This is now a reality, asEllen Kuras, cinematographer nominated for an Oscar for her documentary The Betrayal-Nerakhoon (2008), shot a film last year on this artist already celebrated in an exhibition at the Jeu de Paume. And it’s Kate Winslet who, in addition to co-producing this project she has been working on for years, plays Lee Miller alongside
Marion Cotillard
,
Alexander Skarsgård
Josh O’Connor(The Crown, Only the Earth) and Andrea Riseborough(ZeroZeroZero, To Leslie), Noémie Merlant and Zita Hanrot. We can only imagine that the film was a tough shoot, since Kate Winslet slipped and ended up in hospital in September 2022, while filming shots in Croatia. A camera also fell on his back while filming in Saint-Malo. But it’s the kind of intense role that could win him an Oscar. The film received rave reviews when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, which is currently underway.

We also know that the biopic, soberly titled Lee, is based on the book The Lives of Lee Miller, written by the photographer’s son, Antony Penrose, and published in France in 1994. The film focuses on a specific period in the artist’s life, between 1938 and 1948. It was then that Lee Miller began photographing the lives of people, particularly women, and the horror of the camps, during the Second World War. The strongest and most famous photograph of the woman who was Picasso’s friend.
Picasso
and Cocteau remains the daring self-portrait she made in Adolf Hitler’s bathtub, on her way to the Nazi leader’s Munich apartment just after his suicide in April 1945. Photographing horror left its mark on the artist, in addition to her own demons to battle: Lee Miller, known for her beauty, frankness and toughness, experienced alcoholism, depression and self-destructive behavior.

Lee, the biopic on Lee Miller by Ellen Kuras, has no release date yet. Avatar 3, in cinemas in 2025. The Regime series will be released in 2024 on HBO.
