Austin Butler, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix… Ari Aster’s insane new cast
A few years after the buzz surrounding Midsommar (2019), led by Florence Pugh, American filmmaker Ari Aster is back with fresh details about his highly anticipated next feature: Eddington (2025). Rumored to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film boasts a stunning ensemble cast, including Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Joaquin Phoenix.

Nearly a year after the mixed reception of his third feature, Beau Is Afraid (2023), Ari Aster is preparing a dramatic return to the big screen with a new horror western. Eddington (2025) follows a couple traveling through New Mexico, trying to reach Los Angeles during a pandemic.
What begins as a romantic road trip quickly takes a dark turn. After running out of gas near the quaint town of Eddington, the couple’s journey descends into a nightmare. Given the director’s flair for eerie atmospheres and grotesque characters, and with filming currently underway according to Deadline, the movie is already shaping up to be one of 2025’s most talked-about releases.
An impressive all-Star cast: Austin Butler, Emma Stone, and Joaquin Phoenix
Having previously cast Toni Collette in Hereditary (2019) and Joaquin Phoenix in the dark comedy Beau Is Afraid (2023), Ari Aster once again assembles a star-studded lineup for his new A24 production.
Joaquin Phoenix, the unforgettable lead of Joker (2019), returns to the screen in Eddington. He’s joined by the incomparable Emma Stone, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2023 for Poor Things and is soon to appear in Yorgos Lanthimos’s next film, Bugonia—a role for which she shaved her head.
Also on the cast list? Hollywood favorite Pedro Pascal, soon to be seen in The Fantastic Four and the second season of The Last of Us. Adding to this already stellar lineup, Aster brings in Californian actor Austin Butler, electrifying in his villainous role in Dune: Part Two, already in theaters. With such a high-profile cast, Eddington may well secure a coveted slot in the Official Selection at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
