Shortly after the release of Challengers and Queer, Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming projects are beginning to emerge. Among them: the thriller After the Hunt starring Julia Roberts and Chloë Sevigny, the biopic Artificial about the founder of OpenAI starring Andrew Garfield, and a new adaptation of the cult novel American Psycho starring Austin Butler…

  • By Nathan Merchadier.

  • In recent years, Luca Guadagnino has made a name for himself as a particularly prolific director, stringing together films with impressive casts. After working with Timothée Chalamet in Bones and All (2022) and Zendaya in Challengers (2024), he continues to raise the bar.

According to American media Deadline, the Italian director is now working on an adaptation of American Psycho, the cult novel written by Bret Easton Ellis in 1991 and first brought to the screen by director Mary Harron in 2000. That film, featuring a physically intense performance by Christian Bale at the peak of his art, sparked controversy for its extreme violence and its biting satire of the 1980s consumer culture.

Produced by the American studios Lionsgate, the new feature directed by Luca Guadagnino will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but rather a whole new cinematic production.

One crucial question remained: who would succeed Christian Bale in the role of Patrick Bateman, the racist and misogynistic sociopath with gruesome murderous impulses? It has since been revealed that the part will go to the brilliant Austin Butler.

Before his name was announced, Variety had mentioned several other actors in an October 2024 article. According to the media, the shortlist included Jacob Elordi, Charles Melton, Harris Dickinson, Aubrey Plaza, Lucien Laviscount, and Timothée Chalamet, who had already starred in two of Luca Guadagnino’s films (Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All).

After the Hunt, Luca Guadagnino’s new film starring Julia Roberts

In addition to this exciting project, Luca Guadagnino is reportedly working on several other feature films. Starting with After the Hunt scheduled for 2026 and for which the Italian director has brought together a trio of leading actresses. The film will star Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, 2022), and Chloë Sevigny.

According to the information reported by Deadline, the storyline of this thriller will revolve around a university professor (played by Julia Roberts), who have to deal with the fallout from an accusation made by one of her students against a colleague. Another part of the plot explores a dark secret from her own past that threatens to come to light.

American actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who previously appeared in Call Me by Your Name (2017), is reuniting with Luca Guadagnino on the film After the Hunt. Also joining the cast is Andrew Garfield, last seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

Artificial, the biopic about the creator of OpenAI starring Andrew Garfield

Sometimes, art reflects the anxieties of its time. With his new project, Luca Guadagnino seems to do just that. At a moment when artificial intelligence is often viewed as the greatest threat to authentic artistic creation, the Italian filmmaker is preparing a biopic focusing on the man behind today’s most widely used AI software.

Artificial tells the story of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and the driving force behind the ubiquitous ChatGPT. According to the media Deadline, the biographical film will “evolve around the period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAi in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days.”

the period during which the president of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI was fired and rehired in the span of a few days.

Fifteen years after starring in The Social Network – a film about Facebook – Andrew Garfield returns to the world of tech moguls, playing the lead role in this new project. Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov will be joining him – both of them received an Oscar nomination in 2025 for their performances in A Complete Unknown and Anora, respectively.

Separate rooms… Another exciting project for Luca Guadagnino

Among his many other endeavors, the prolific Italian director recently presented Queer at the Venice Film Festival. The film was adapted from the 1985 novel of the same name written by William Burroughs and starred the remarkable Daniel Craig in the lead role. Finally, Luca Guadagnino might also be preparing an adaptation of Separate Rooms (1989) by Pier Vittorio Tondelli, which will follow the life of an Italian writer, starring Léa Seydoux.

The film American Psycho by Luca Guadagnino has no release date yet. The film After the Hunt (2026) by Luca Guadagnino, starring Julia Roberts and Chloë Sevigny, has no release date yet.
