A Star Is Born: Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut
In his first film as a director, A Star Is Born, released in 2018, actor Bradley Cooper plays an alcoholic country singer who is swept away by the stunning voice of a young artist, played by Lady Gaga. Madly in love, Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) launches Ally’s (Lady Gaga’s) career, only to be overshadowed by her rising fame. While the Hangover, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Sniper actor sports a scruffy rock star beard, the queen of extravagance sheds her platinum blonde hair and over-the-top makeup for a role that would mark her true breakthrough as an actress.
Bradley Cooper stepped behind the camera for the first time with this feature film, a remake following three earlier versions. The story was first told in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, again in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
Each version is inspired by the struggles with alcoholism and the career decline of American actor John Barrymore. As for Lady Gaga, this wasn’t her first foray into acting. She had already won a Golden Globe in 2016 for Best Actress in a Miniseries for her role as Countess Elizabeth in American Horror Story.

An award-winning Film
With its tragic love story and all-star cast, the film captured the public’s attention, starting with the release of its trailer. Once in theaters, audiences were charmed by Lady Gaga’s acoustic performances and the surprisingly soulful voice of the American actor, not previously known for his musical talent. Above all, an unexpected chemistry between the two stars emerged on screen—and extended to the red carpet.
Indeed, the duo graced many of the biggest awards shows following the release of A Star Is Born. From Best Performance in a Movie for Lady Gaga at the 2019 MTV Movie Awards to Best Film Music at the 2019 BAFTAs, and Best Original Song at both the Golden Globes and the 2019 Oscars, the soundtrack and screenplay enjoyed resounding success. And it isn’t over. The film’s airing on TFX this Tuesday, May 6, 2025, may well win it a new generation of fans.
