For its fourth edition, the Reiffers Art Initiatives endowment fund brings together five emerging French artists for an exhibition running until May 10. Image is their primary material, a playground for experimenting with new forms and imagining alternative narratives.

Whether photographic or video, virtual or real, found online or created from scratch, this visual matter is transformed, hybridized, and reconfigured by the artists—venturing into the realm of the uncanny to jolt us out of our stupor in the face of the relentless flood of a thousand billion images we consume every day.

In the films by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, 3D animation blends with live-action footage. Their raw, unclassifiable cinema swings between absurdity and extreme violence, cynicism and innocence.

Jean-Vincent Simonet’s photographs challenge perceptions: are they hand-painted artworks or digital creations? With him, the image regains its materiality, seeking a renewed aura for the 21st century.

Winner of the 2025 Reiffers Art Initiatives Prize, Anhar Salem embraces the overexposed, ever-present images circulating on social media. She interrogates their power in society, their influence on our lifestyles and collective imagination, and how they shape our self-representations online.

In Nanténé Traoré’s work, the photographic image is printed on velvet, giving it a hazy materiality. The image seems to fade and abstract itself. Might it be more powerful when it withholds visibility?

“1000 milliards d’images”, is available from April 16 to May 10, 2025, at Reiffers Art Initiatives, Paris 17th arrondissement.
