Who is Nina Kraviz, the Russian empress of techno?

Sur la pochette du nouvel EP de son label, Happy new year! We wish you happiness!, dont elle a réalisé un morceau avec le dj snazzy, une illustration pour le moins étonnante : les plans d’une école soviétique dont la construction était prévue dans les années 60 mais qui n’aura finalement jamais vu le jour… Il faut dire que Trip, le label russe fondé en 2014 par la DJ, aime sortir son public de ses zones de confort, revendiquant d'aborder dans ce nouvel EP “les extrémités inhospitalières de la musique électronique”, oscillant entre techno et IDM (Industrial Dance Music). Un album de huit titres, signés entre autres par PTU, Buttechno et bien évidemment Nina Kraviz, résolument expérimentaux, riches en sonorités détonantes et en rythmes saccadés. En attendant le 28 décembre, Numéro vous en dévoile un extrait.

“When I DJ, I’m fucking alive”, s’exalte la productrice russe dans les colonnes du Guardian, qui l'a qualifiée de “titan de la techno”. Son style ? Une techno rêche renforcée d’acid, son genre favori, qu’elle ponctue à coups de beats acérés qui oscillent entre la ghetto house made in Chicago, l’hardcore old-school, la trance ou encore la drumb’n’bass, ses premières amours. Un style débraillé et jamais terne, en somme. Numéro revient sur 4 points clés de son parcours phénoménal.

We wish you happiness! for which she did a track with DJ Snazzy, is an astonishing illustration: the plans for a soviet school whose construction was planned for the 1960s, but never saw the light of day… It has to be said that Trip, the Russian label founded by the DJ in 2014, likes taking its audiences out their comfort zone, claiming to address just that on this new EP, “the inhospitable extremities of electro music” oscillating between techno and IDM (Industrial Dance Music). An album of eight tracks that are resolutely experimental, rich in explosive sonorities and jerking rhythms. While we’re waiting for January 14th, Numéro unveils an extract.

A tough-line techno reinforced with acid, her favourite genre, which she punctuates with sharp beats that move between pure Chicago ghetto house, old-school hardcore, trance and drum ‘n’ bass, her first musical loves. A slightly scruffy style, but it’s certainly never dull. Numéro looks at six key points in her phenomenal career.

Elle a mixé cet automne en haut de la tour Eiffel

Le 15 octobre, la DJ russe made in Irkoutsk a investi le premier étage de la tour Eiffel pour un set organisé à l'initiative du média Cercle, site spécialisé dans le livestream de concerts live et de DJ sets. Un show spectaculaire dans une ambiance coucher de soleil.

Elle a été journaliste et agent d’artiste

Alors qu’elle est encore étudiante en médecine, Nina Kraviz anime une émission de radio et écrit pour un fanzine, avant de devenir journaliste pour le légendaire magazine russe Ptuch, avant de devenir assistante d’agent d’artiste au sein de l'agence Caviar Lounge à Moscou. Elle finit par intégrer la Red Bull Music Academy de Melbourne en 2006 et se lie d’amitié avec le producteur et DJ anglais basé à Berlin, Matt Edwards, plus connu sous le nom de Radio Slave, qui diffuse ses premiers morceaux.

On October 15th, the DJ from Irkoutsk took over the first floor of the Eiffel Tower for a set organised by the media initiative Cercle that specialises in livestreams of live concerts and DJ sets. A spectacular show against a beautiful sunset.

She’s been a journalist and artist’s agent

While she was still studying medicine, Nina Kraviz was also animating a radio show and writing for a fanzine, before becoming a journalist for the legendary Russian magazinePtuch, and then the assistant to an artist’s agent at the Caviar Lounge agency in Moscow. She ended up joining the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne in 2006 and formed a friendship with the Berlin-based English DJ and producer Matt Edwards, better known under the name of Radio Slave, who released her first tracks.

Dentiste le jour, DJ la nuit

Avant de devenir une DJ planétaire, Nina Kraviz n’était que Нина Кравиц, jeune étudiante en odontologie dans sa ville natale d'Irkoutsk, en Sibérie orientale. “J’ai essayé de devenir dentiste pour me forcer à me lever tôt. Maintenant, je suis DJ et je me couche à l’heure où je devais me lever auparavant”, ironise-t-elle dans Brain. Diplômée, elle mène pendant longtemps une double vie : résidente tous les vendredis soirs au Propaganda, l’un des clubs moscovites les plus respectés, Nina Kraviz exerçait le jour dans un hôpital pour vétérans.

En semptembre dernier, la dj russe s'est associée au label américain pour dessiner une collection de solaires intitulée Feel Your Beat. En 2012, elle avait également composé un morceau à l'occasion du défilé Hugo Boss printemps-été 2013 intitulé Hugo Tracks. 

Dentist by day, DJ by night

Before becoming an international DJ, Nina Kraviz was Нина Кравиц, a young dentistry student in her home town of Irkoutsk in Eastern Siberia. “I tried to become a dentist so I could get up early. Now I’m a DJ I go to bed at the time I used to get up,” she says in Brain. After she graduated, she led a double life: resident every Friday night at Propaganda, one of the most respected nightclubs in Moscow, Nina Kraviz would work by day in a veterans hospital.

In September, the russian DJ collaborated with the american label to design a collection of sunglasses, Feel Your Beat. In 2012, for the Hugo Boss spring-summer fashion show, she wrote a track for the german brand entilted Hugo Tracks.
