DaBaby: 25 million streams in just 30 minutes for his new album

Ce troisième album comptabilisait déjà 25,9 millions de streams sur Spotify, seulement 30 minutes après sa diffusion. Héros de cette prestation, le rappeur DaBaby sortait vendredi 17 avril son troisième opus BLAME IT ON BABY, après Baby on Baby (sorti en mars 2019) et KIRK – qui s’était vendu à 145 000 exemplaires dès la première semaine. En moins de 5 ans, il est devenu l’un des rappeurs les plus adulés de sa génération, comptant même Kendall Jenner parmi ses fans invétérés.

Sa carrière dans la musique débute en 2015 : alors âgé de 24 ans, DaBaby (Jonathan Lyndale Kirk de son vrai nom) se fait connaître en publiant des mixtapes. Trois ans plus tard, il se fait repérer lors d’un concert par le directeur du label South Coast Music Group, Arnold Taylor, aussi responsable du succès du roi de la trap, Future. Dès ce moment, DaBaby se forge une renommée aux États-Unis, notamment grâce aux chansons Goin Baby et Suge.

Masque de bricolage sur le visage et durag bariolé sur la tête, DaBaby pose pour la pochette de son nouvel album. Mercredi 15 avril, le rappeur avait créé la surprise en annonçant cette sortie, après avoir teasé son retour avec les chansons Find My Way et SHUT UP, parues il y a quelques semaines. C’est dans une vidéo parodiant les spots publicitaires américains, dans laquelle plusieurs témoins attribuent leurs insuccès et leurs malheurs au rappeur, qu’il avait annoncé ce retour, avec pour slogan “Any Accident. Any Injuriy. Any Woman Problem. Just Blame it on Baby.” (“Tout accident. Toute blessure. Tout problème amoureux. Baby est le fautif.”

Sur des notes de synthés de guitare, la voix rauque du rappeur se fait menaçante, appuyant les productions des habituels collaborateurs du rappeur, London on da Track, DJ Kid et Jetsonmade. Mais cet album réserve surtout de nombreux feats (et pas des moindres) : les rappeurs Quavo, Future et Roddy Ricch, ainsi que la chanteuses de R’n’B Ashanti et la rappeuse Megan Thee Stallion accompagnent six des treize titres de ce nouvel album, dans des duos doux et apaisants ou bien agressifs.

Within the first half hour of its launch, his new album was streamed 25.9 million times on Spotify. On Friday 17th April rapper DaBaby released his third opus BLAME IT ON BABY, hot on the heels of Baby on Baby (released in March 2019) and KIRK –which sold 145 000 copies in its first week. In less than five years he has become one of the most adulated rappers of his generation and counts Kendall Jenner among his die-hard fans. 

His musical career began in 2015 when the then 24-year old DaBaby (Jonathan Lyndale Kirk is his real name) put out his mixtapes. Three years later, he was discovered at a concert by the owner of South Coast Music Group record label, Arnold Taylor, the brains behind the king of trap, Future. And the rest, as they say, is history: DaBaby became known throughout the USA, notably thanks to two songs Goin Baby and Suge.

With a DIY mask on his face and a colourful durag on his head, DaBaby poses for the cover of this new album. On Wednesday 15th, the rapper caused a stir by announcing the release – having dropping teasers about his return with the songs Find My Way and SHUT UP a few weeks earlier. In a video parodying American TV commercials, where several witnesses attribute their failures and misfortunes to the rapper, he announced his comeback, with the slogan: “Any Accident. Any Injury. Any Woman Problem. Just Blame it on Baby.”

Set against guitar synths, the raspy voice of the rapper is threatening, pushing the productions of the rapper's usual collaborators, London on da Track, DJ Kid and Jetsonmade. But this album is also rich in featurings: rappers Quavo, Future and Roddy Ricch, as well as the R'n'B singers of Ashanti and rapper Megan Thee Stallion accompany no less than six of the thirteen tracks of this new album, in soft and soothing or aggressive duets.
