Autoportrait nu, grenouilles et Béatrice Dalle… les photos de Juergen Teller réveillent le Marais

Avec son esthétique crue et son humour incisif, Juergen Teller s'est construit un style unique qui séduit depuis trois décennies la mode, le luxe, la musique et les magazines. Un sein de Raquel Zimmerman pour une campagne Céline, un portrait de Béatrice Dalle pour le magazine Man about Town ou des photos d'animaux… la galerie Suzanne Traviese propose une exposition de photos récentes (2016-2017) et souvent inédites. Point de départ : un autoportrait chargé de signification où, étendu sur le sol, entouré de pêches, et portant un sweatshirt aux couleurs du drapeau de l'Union européenne où il manque une étoile (en référence au Brexit), Juergen Teller semble plus s'intéresser aux sensations de l'escargot se trouvant à ses côtés (animal réputé pour sa capacité de reproduction) qu'à son téléphone à l'appareil photo enclenché… forment un tout qui reflète le style totalement identifiable du photographe allemand. Comme le rappelle le critique d'art Eric Troncy : “La photographie de Teller est caractérisée par sa bienveillance et son humilité : deux sentiments qui transparaissent toujours dans la manière dont il restitue ce quʼil photographie. Elle dépeint une époque structurée par le pouvoir et les rapports de force en utilisant radicalement les stratégies de son contraire. Teller nʼest jamais ironique avec les objets, les paysages et les personnages quʼil photographie – il se réserve en général ce traitement à lui-même.”

With his crude and incisively funny aesthetic, Juergen Teller has built his own unique style that has been seducing the worlds of fashion, luxury, music and magazines for the last 30 years. Raquel Zimmerman’s breast for a Céline campaign, a portrait of Béatrice Dalle for the magazine Man about Town and photos of animals… the Suzanne Traviese gallery is hosting a show of recent photos (2016-2017), some of them previously unseen. The starting point: a self portrait imbued with meaning where lying on the floor, surrounded by peaches and wearing a hoodie printed with the European Union flag missing one star (a reference to Brexit), Juergen Teller seems more interested in the snail at his side (an animal known for ability to rapidly reproduce) than his mobile phone… forming a totality that perfectly reflects the instantly recognisable style of the German photographer. As noted by art critic Eric Troncy: “The photography of Teller is characterised by his kindness and humility: two emotions that always come across with the way he photographs everything. It depicts an era structured by power and power relations by radically using opposing strategies. Teller is never ironic with objects, landscapes and the people he photographs – generally he keeps that treatment for himself.”
