Tribute to Josephine Baker at the Dior couture show

Le défilé Dior haute couture printemps-été 2023 en hommage à Joséphine Baker 

Alors qu’un film sur la vie de Joséphine Baker avec la chanteuse Janelle Monae dans le rôle titre est en préparation, Maria Grazia Chiuri, directrice artistique des lignes féminines de Dior, rend hommage à la chanteuse, danseuse afro-américaine arrivée à Paris en 1925 et naturalisée française en 1937. Ainsi la collection Dior haute couture s’inspire des Années folles avec des créations en soie, en velours, souvent avec un effet froissé, qui glissent sur le corps, parfois ornées de broderies délicates, de minuscules clous argentés ou paillettes reflétant la lumière au gré des mouvement. L’esprit cabaret se retrouve également dans des créations à franges en dégradé d’argent et d’or qui contrastent avec des tailleurs et de petits manteaux en laine froide, inspirés du vestiaire masculin, et dont la longueur au-dessus de la cheville dévoile des chaussures imposantes. 

Un panthéon de femmes par l’artiste Mickalene Thomas 

Pour le décor du défilé Dior haute couture printemps-été 2023, Maria Grazia Chiuri fait appel à l’artiste américaine Mickalene Thomas, qui avait déjà été invitée en 2019 à réinterpréter un sac Lady Dior pour la maison. Plasticienne engagée, Mickalene Thomas  questionne dans ses œuvres la représentation des femmes noires, du genre, et les normes de la beauté, à travers des peintures, collages, vidéos et photographies. Pour la maison Dior, elle réalise une galerie de portraits géants de personnalités exceptionnelles représentant un panthéon de femmes. Un ultime hommage à Joséphine Baker, première femme noire à avoir été admise au Panthéon en France, en 2021.

Tribute to Josephine Baker at the Dior Spring/Summer 2023 couture show

While a biopic about Josephine Baker starring singer Janelle Monae is in the making, Dior’s womenswear creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri pays tribute to the African American dancer and singer who landed in Paris in 1925 and was naturalized French in 1937. The Dior couture collection drew its inspired from the Roaring Twenties, with silk and velvet creations gliding over the body, often with a crumpled effect or decorated with fine embroidery, tiny silver studs, and sequins that naturally reflect the light. The spirit of the cabaret was also to be found in the silver and gold shades of fringed creations, which contrasted with the suits and ankle-length cold wool coats paired with imposing shoes inspired by the men’s wardrobe.

A whole pantheon of women imagined by artist Mickalene Thomas 

For the set of the Dior Spring/Summer 2023 couture show, Maria Grazia Chiuri called on American artist Mickalene Thomas, who had already been invited to reinterpret a Lady Dior bag for the house in 2019. As a committed visual artist, Mickalene Thomas questions the representation of black women, gender, and beauty standards in her paintings, collages, videos, and photographs. For the house of Dior, she created a giant portrait gallery, like a pantheon of women featuring exceptional personalities. It stood as a final tribute to Josephine Baker, the first black woman to ever entered the French Pantheon in 2021.
